Help Oh oh, Ive done something bad

Hi all,

This is my first post, though Ive been lurking for a while.

I need more experienced help on this one... I have a Galaxy Gio, in Australia and it was network locked...

I got the phone, was mostly happy with it (though it did shut itself down by itself a few times).. until I got the very same issue I had with my previous HTC Desire... that is... the 3g connection just refuses to communicate on a whim...

I thought the problem might have been with 2.2 froyo so I searched around and found I could flash the thing to 2.3.3... so I did.

I have NOT rooted the phone.

Anyway now I have looked at the *#*#4636#*#*; Phone Info menu, and the preferred network type has gone from "GSM auto (PRL)" to "GSM/CDMA auto (PRL)"... the audio during calls is now not as good, and the connection issue for data mentioned before is way worse.

Im pretty sure its purely running on GSM and trying to connect to CDMA when there is no CDMA antenna.... the battery is going down much faster this way...

Now the big problem, is that I cant change the option back to GSM Auto, or what I would prefer which would be WCDMA preferred.

I am wondering a few things..

1) can I revert back to another ROM that will fix this issue (even if it is 2.2), and is it possible to back to 2.2 since Im on 2.3 now?

2) i understand I need to edit the ro.telephony file to change the preferred network however I a) do not have permission to alter this file and b) do not have any line in the file that has ro.telephony in it...

3) is there ANY way to adjust the preferred network in another way? Is this happening because it was network locked?

Sorry to be so broad but I really want a functioning phone.

Thanks so much in advance

Thanks for the reply.

I dont think I can... I have no copy of the original firmware. Its a telecom specific one and I cannot find it online, so unless ODIN backed up the original somewhere, or unless I am missing something, I do not believe I have that option.

I tried changing it to older firmwares that are available... same issue comes up still.
