Help OK Google and Voice Commands don't always work?

Hey all,

I have the S5 G900F and I live in NJ. I bought this specific S5 model because while I was doing my research on buying a S5, I read that the regular US model didn't have some of the bands that the G900F has. So, I bought that one.

I've been noticing that when I'm driving, sometimes the voice to text analyzer doesn't work so well. This has happened when I am on H and H+ with a good amount of bars. I am on the AT&T network. If I dictate a text or even ask Google to do a search or a simple command, it can take 30 seconds to process or just get hung up all together.

My phone is on the CM12 version. It came this way from the previous owner.

Am I experiencing these issues because I'm on the non-US model S5 or is it simply because the area I'm in has a bad network connection sometimes? I didn't think the CM12 mod had anything to do with this issue.

I welcome any kind of advice.

almost any phone will have trouble recognizing speech while you are driving.

My Garmin 2797 GPS has the same features, and the background noise obscures the voice commands.

I think you are trying to beat a dead horse into life.

If it works when sitting still, that is the best it will do.

My wife's S5 answers the phone for her every time..... she just yells "Answer!!!" real loud, and it works. even across the bedroom.... she is usually asleep and being an amputee, cannot get out of bed fast enough to answer any phone. So, for her, Voice Command was a great thing to have.

but try that in a car, and it will ignore you
 
I never would've guessed that it was because I was in a moving vehicle and the background noise was hindering it . I usually a.m. and very quiet cars though .

I had a suspicion if it was because I didn't buy the US model phone and it didn't have the same cellular antenna is in it .

Thank you for your advice . I'll try it when I go to a stoplight in some of the areas where experience issues.
 
The antenna is irrelevant to the problem.

it is totally an audio issue with "white noise" being picked up by the microphone.
And turn OFF Noise Canceling... that gives Voice Command a ration of shit....
 
Settings / Applications / Call / Noise Reduction


also, you might want to check:

Settings / Call Settings / Voice Privacy
I have mine set to OFF

when I don't, I get a lot of missed words when using Bluetooth headsets.
 
I was afraid you were going to mention those paths to get to Noise Reduction.

I don't have any of those menus you mentioned.
 
I don't think interior noise from my car is the problem. There is hardly any noise in the vehicle when I do the commands. Not to mention, Androids have Android Auto. They are made to be issued commands while in the car.

Like I said earlier, I know my phone doesn't have all the LTE or 3G bands that some of the US models have. I wonder if that is somehow impeding a fluent data connection.

Maybe I should go out and buy the US version of the S5 and compare it.
 
The ability of the phone to interpret Voice Commands has zero to do with DATA connections.
It is all internal to the phone...

and say what you will, in the car, if there are any wind noises at all, you can forget using Voice Commands...

My Garmin 2797 GPS receiver is specifically built to work in a car, but my Pontiac Vibe is noisy, I hear tires on the pavement, and I hear wind going by the door seals... and the Garmin will NOT work unless the car is sitting still.

then it works pretty darn good.
 
I agree with you about potential impact of auto noise AZgl1500.

But personally I have an open mind op might be right about data singal strength as another potential cause. The complaint was that it can take 30 seconds to finish a command or sometimes just hangs.

You'd think it would process the audio on the phone and just pass the text (very low bandwidth), but I'm not so sure it doesn't just send the audio and process it back in G-Land.

Try doing a speedtest next time you have a problem.
 
I will try doing the speed test the next time I have the issue. I'll actually pull over to the side of the road immediately when I notice the issue taking place.

I talked to a friend who owns a a S6 (not rooted or anything) and he said he sometimes experiences the same thing. That kind of makes me feel a little better.

I just ran it with my ADSL which at the best of times will give me 14 mbps.

tonight, my daugher is watching a movie on her kindle.....

I almost snagged 7 mbps :(

Streaming Video is a data monger.

I have noticed the same thing when I tried to watch movies on my TV set via WiFi....
I quickly gave that up, as it just killed my laptop access to the real world.
 
Not sure if this helps, but I drove to New York city and had my window cracked 1/2 way on the passenger side. My phone had zero issues at highway speed dictating text messages or doing voice commands. When I was coming back to NJ, only in certain parts did the phone receive the dictation, but got hung up processing the command. I do know it recognized the dictating because it spelled out the command when i said it.

I haven't had a chance to pull over and test the network speed when this happens, but I thought it was interesting.
 
I restored my phone back to the factory settings. It's not rooted anymore. I find it hard to say if that had any impact on the voice commands.

I'm curious about something. I listed some of the different variant models of the S5 below. What I'm wondering is, being that I am on AT&T is it possible my issue could be contributed from not owning say the 900A which carries the 700 band that my 900F does not have?

My phone is also on 5.0. It will not update past that update.
