Okay Google Now!

Can anyone tell me if it's true that you can't send a text using Touchless Control without touching a "send" button after dictating? Or is there a way around that perhaps using Moto Assist? I was really hoping to make that work for when I'm driving.

Ideally, you would think that the phone would read your message back to you out loud, and then allow you to issue a voice command to send. Is that not possible?

Many thanks!

To my knowledge it is not. I've tried it. It will type what you say into a message for you but you must push send to send it. However, I'm not a lawyer nor do I play one on tv, but I can say that pushing send on a text message takes no more concentration than looking at my radio to push the button to change the station.

Now, many states (including mine in Ohio) that have outlawed texting and driving. Should you have an accident in the process of sending a text completely hands free, hands free other than hitting send manually or using your hands to type it and send it, I'm pretty sure you are breaking the law and can be held liable for the accident whether it's your fault or not.

Once they check your phone for text messages sent around an accident, if they see a text sent they will not know, nor will you be able to prove if you sent it hands assisted, hands free or hands only. All the phone records will show is a text was sent from your phone at the time of the accident.

Now, I drive with no hands at times. Whlie I'm eating fries, turning my radio station and wiping up a spill. I watch women put on their make-up on the way to work every morning while driving 70 in a 55 or worse while driving 55 in a 70. All of those things are every bit as dangerous as texting and driving in my opinion, but eating and driving or putting on make-up and driving is not illegal (at least as far as I know).

Bottom line, be careful if you have to text and drive. Even if it's not your fault, if you have an accident, you will be charged.

Anyone else feel like you have to SHOUT "OKAY GOOGLE NOW!" sometimes? I wish there were a sensitivity setting that could be adjusted.

For example, my phone sits on the end table next to my recliner in my home. With the television on at a reasonable volume and no one else talking. I have to shout "OKAY GOOGLE NOW!" in order for it to respond to me. Once it responds, I can talk in my normal tone and it will respond.

Anyone else getting that?

Try recording the phrase (or alternate) again sitting in the area where you have it. The sound meter might show you that there is more ambient noise then you are aware of.

I have stuck with OK Google.

Update- There was a bug with this which would activate touchless control when there was talking, or videos of people talking even though the words ok Google were never spoken. Changed back to ok Google now, no longer have the issue.

My Google Now/Search doesn't work much like demoed in that video.

I could get it to do the conversation about the mayor of Chicago, but simple stuff like 'where am I?" doesn't bring up a map. Asking the same question about Apple Store in Mall of America just brings up a Google Web search.

Do you need that other app you linked to get that kind of conversational response?

Mine works exactly as shown in the video. You do notice that he hits the button in the upper right corner before asking each subsequent question ... right?

Did you try training the phrase "OK Google Now"? You may find that there is too much noise where you are and the training option shows you. The noise might be what is causing it not to understand you.

It recognizes what I'm saying perfectly, it types it out after it's recognized, it's just the results are often not a card with a voice response, just a goggle web search result.

The demo is just using stock Google Search, right?

Yes. My reference to OK Google Now was just to check the ambient noise.

When it fails do you retry it? I found that occasionally it doesn't respond the first time but does when it is repeated.

DistortedLoop, I just found the solution to this. You must first set your address as HOME and MAPS (if that's the one you want) as your default navigation application.

To do the former, start MAPS and brush your finger in from the left to bring up the menu. Choose SETTINGS. Then choose EDIT HOME OR WORK. Then you can enter your addresses.

I managed to do the latter as follows: OK GOOGLE NOW - "Navigate Home" - then it will prompt you as to which mapping application you want to use. I clicked MAPS then ALWAYS then from that point on, OK GOOGLE NOW navigation worked!

This might solve a lot of problems many people seem to be having. I was surprised I could not find the answer, and just kind of stumbled into it.

I did "Ok Google Now, Panthers" today and it said, "The Panthers lost to the 49s 23 to 10." Pretty smart, it knew exactly what I wanted and more!

I have had luck launching applications and navigations. I use Rocket Player and haven't tried to launch music yet.

Have you guys played with the hands free texting since the Play Store update? It ROCKS. When you have an incoming text it will ask you if you want to reply. You say what you want to say. It reads it back to you and asks you if you want to send it. OMG. I love it!!!!!!!

Is there a way to set a calendar event hands free?

Every time I try, it shows the pending event in GoogleNow and I have to tap "create event" on the screen first.

Even if it must insist on confirmation, it would be nice if that confirmation could be voice.

Love Touchless Control but clearly a work in progress. Theoretically I am too!

One thing that DRIVES ME MAD: When you say:

"Okay Google Now, call ______"

Phone says, in LOUD voice over speaker:

"CALLING _______, on their mobile phone" or a variation.

Can you turn off this voice confirmation or at least take it off the speaker?

Thanks,

David

The only way I found is to turn System Volume to zero.

I think it is a s safeguard.

It frequently gets the name wrong when I say it. The fact that it announces it to me is what brings the fact to my attention. Without that announce.
