Ok so summary, i have a classic mini, it has a dash with a 8.5 inch wide and 3.7 inch heigh on the left, sliding up to 4.2 inch wide on the right hole in its dash where a glove box used to be, I have removed the golve box and still have the wee door on the dash. Plan is to build an Android tablet in that hole and wire it in as a GPS / sound system to the radio etc.

Would have used an iPad except im not an idiot and dont want 3G as the car is only used when it is dry (4 months of the year). I dont mind running a wire to the roof for good gps signal, just not sure what devices support which gps attachments etc, so any ideas or sugestions are welcome

oh and app i planned on using is navigon but if there are others that work on GPS only please recommend
Thanks

Well, you'll want a 32 GB tablet or be able to tether your tablet to a phone for internet data if you have no 3G. Because 16 GB or less would probably be pretty tight space to jam an offline map archive and music. But you should be able to find a tablet that fits those rough dimensions and make a decent rig to hold it in place. No external GPS connections would be necessary if the tablet had a decent GPS receiver. And I don't know of any mobile device that has an plug for an external antenna, anyhow.

As for something that actually fits in that space, that will probably be up to you to find.

Only problem is with the 32GB versions the cost goes crazy, music isnt the biggest priority but surely the A1CS X220 would be able to handle even the maps side of things ? It does have an external aerial by the looks of it so should be able to pick up signal on its own or run it beside the car aerial

actually melding it into the car isnt the problem, just need to know which tablets would work inside a car and provide good gps signal, and also any good apps that would work with just GPS

I don't think GPS will be your problem. It has GPS and I've used my phone as a GPS navigator plenty of times. It works just fine when I have the phone sitting in the coin tray that sits below my head unit.

I think your problem will be storage. I looked at that navigon app you suggested. Navigon Europe claims to take about 2 GBs of memory. That'd leave 2 GB for music and other things, which isn't a lot. But you could always get an SD card and expand if needed.

If you want a purely navigation system, I could see that tablet serving as one. I generally shy away from cheap tablets as I live by the mantra of 'you get what you pay for'. But it should be sufficient. That Navigon app is pretty pricing, though.

ok cause the A1CS X220 can take 8Gb sd card so that would provide enough space for music and it makes it easier to transfer music.

The other app i saw was Navfree which my friend has used on his iPad before and seems to work well, Most likely yes you get what you pay for but dont have that much to pay lol might go for the A1CS X220 and see what happens....

The site I was looking at said it can take up to a 32 GB SD card. I'm sure you could find a good priced 32 GB Sd card (I'd recommend at least a class 4 for music and GPS usage). Just make sure you get it from a reputable vendor (Like amazon) so you know you're getting a decent SD card. There are a lot of counterfeit cards on eBay and Craigslist.
