How do I get to the sent text messages in my phone

Assuming you are using an SMS app with the normal Android style (conversations).
You could try installing a different SMS app. Pansi SMS has the option of using either the conversation style or the traditional inbox/outbox style, whichever you prefer. Most just do it conversation style though, since that's the norm these days.
