Root [OLD][Sprint or Boost!] Cwm flashable stock 2.3.6 UN-ROOT, UN-CWM

Loota

Android Enthusiast
While flashing my aunts phone this weekend I took advantage of the opportunity to pull a completely stock image including the file that will get rid of cwm.

Edit: Boost image was made from katracho's copy, with Superuser.apk uninstalled with a file explorer and root removed with bads3ctor's unroot zip.

SPRINT: This image is for SPRINT ONLY. It does not have root. It will overwrite cwm with the stock recovery. This is useful for those of you with cwm on your sprint phones that want to return to a fresh install of 2.3.6 for the purposes of returning your phones for repair. Or if you just want to return to complete stock.

BOOST: This image is for BOOST ONLY. It does not have root. It will overwrite cwm with the stock recovery. This is useful for those of you with cwm on your sprint phones that want to return to a fresh install of 2.3.6 for the purposes of returning your phones for repair. Or if you just want to return to complete stock.

One final warning if you haven't read between the lines... if you flash this on your phone and let it boot back up.. you will lose cwm.

Sorry noob talking, what are you supposed to do once you've downloaded the files? I'm not to good on flashing and I really only know how to very basically use odin! Thanks so much!

Hi cool, this is a cwm flashable rom so you would need cwm on your phone to flash them. Keep in mind however that the purpose of this rom is essentially to remove cwm on your phone as well as root. This is meant to restore your phone to its original state if you have sprint and you want to remove all modifications.

It will make your phone as if you never made any changes after applying the update and factory restored.

Thanks so much!! That's all I needed to know!! I have been trying to remove my root for awhile because it was negatively effecting aspects of my phone. Thanks for the info and the quick response!

So when I try to update I go to CWM, I go to Install zip from sdcard then I select choose zip from sdcard find SPRINTSTOCK.zip and of course click yes but when I click yes it won't let me install the update it just says installation aborted. What am I doing wrong?

EDIT
Just as a side note I tried renaming it to update.zip and I wiped delvic, cache, etc.

You're trying to install it with the wrong function. This isn't update.zip which is something that well, updates or installs a script or slight change. If you were to use bads3ctors root for sprint then you could us that.

What I've posted here is a full rom so you need to go to backup and restore, and then restore the image. Note that installing it under advanced restore does nthe same thing but in individual pieces. For this just use the non advanced restore.

***Update*** I hope to update this thread with a boost version. The rom is made and verified working.. but 3g is my only net access so uploading it takes awhile/uses a lot of bandwidth.

Boost version was made using the following process...
Flashed 2.3.6 using katrachos upload with root via cwm. Installed es file explorer and navigated to /system/apps/ and deleted the system app superuser.apk. rebooted into cwm and installed bads3ctors boost tu unroot. Rebooted so cwm would be wiped and root was confirmed gone. Odined cwm back on and booted into cwm after a battery pull when odin rebooted phone. Factory reset, advanced > reboot into recovery. Cwm rebooted and I made a backup.. renamed and flashed to a rooted rom and back to confirm.

I think I'm gonna start listing how I do things like this in hopes it may give users some insight and context into how our tools work.

So I must be doing this totally wrong and not realize it. My first method which involved SPRINTRECOVERY.zip to be unzipped:
1. Backup and Restore
2. restore
There was no options to restore with so I just quit
My second method was to unzip SPRINTRECOVERY.zip and go through the same process.

Neither one showed any options for restore and I am using a completely blank SD card for this process. Can you tell me what I am doing wrong. I do have a backup in case something is to go wrong. I am sorry about my noobness (new internet word lol)

EDIT
Ok, I figured out what I was doing wrong. I think anyways. I put the file in the backup file of clockworkmod and now when I do it the process begins but then it says:
MD5 mismatch!
What does that mean and what do I do to fix that?

EDIT EDIT
So I looked it up and followed this tutorial on fixing a MD5 mismatch (20 seconds tutorial to fix MD5 mismatch error no terminal needed - xda-developers) and I still got an error. I am going to keep trying unless you know an easy fix.

EDIT EDIT EDIT
Wow the editing never stops. So I learned about a trick to downloadMD5 Calculator and did all the MD5 calculations for the restore. Tried it again and still no luck... What am I doing wrong?

Lol, over thinking it bro. Props for looking it up for yourself though...

1) Download the rom onto your computer and unzip it once on your computer. You will have a folder with a bunch of files in there.. boot.img, cache.ext4.tar nandroid.md5.

2) Move this folder onto your phone into /clockworkmod/backup/. Don't rename it.

3) Reboot into cwm, make a backup.

4) Reboot into cwm again (quick and easy way is to click advanced from the main screen, and choose reboot recovery)

5) Wipe data/cache

6) Restore the un-renamed rom you just put on your sdcard.

Loota after installing 2.3.6 on my sprint phone is it possible to rerooty phone and reinstall cwm?

Yes, it is totally possible, you will need install cwm, and then flash a root update.zip or a rom with root already installed.

So many props to you!!! It worked!! Thanks so much!!! Now I can experiment with a 2.3.6 root and hopefully make my own ROM. (I said I was a noob but I was half lying, I am a amateur programmer but I know nothing about the physical part of rooting!) Thanks again! Also lol because your recovery still has the Android Market, instead of the stupid PLAY Store.

haha thats because playstore is a user app and android market is a system app, when factory reseting it deletes all non system apps.

Boost version is up. This is not a real stock image but a re-stock image... that is to say a rooted stock image with root removed and superuser.apk removed manually. Dunno if there is any difference but I figured it is worth mentioning...

huh, thats wierd... links broke.. must be cause I hid them and the hide function broke?

Links are back up, ty for the heads up..

Note these backups are the OLD 2.3.6 not the most recent update.

yeah so I tried to do the flash and I'm not exactly sure what I did wrong but my CWM was removed and my su binary doesn't exist anymore but the superuser app is still on my ultra...I've searched high and low read every thread possible and I've tried to re-root my phone X 10000 times but I get an error saying "read only drive" and it won't copy busy box or the binary files to re-root....HEEEELLLLPPPPP :'(

Just guessing but your super user app is prolly still there cause you forgot to do a factory reset before flashing the rom, this is a good idea to do before flashing every rom except in some cases such as an update to the custom rom you had before.

The superuser app shouldn't matter for the update. If you still want to get rid of it, first try a factory reset. if it is still there, odin cwm back onto your phone, reflash the unroot, uncwm rom. Or, flash the unroot update zip bads3ctor posted on these forums.

Odin CWM back onto it reflashed and PRESTO worked like a charm. Thank you so much Loota you rock!

MD5 MISMATCH-this occurs for one of two reasons either the file is corrupt meaning when was made there was error or because of either you renamed folder or when u transferred it to sdcard clockworkmod\backup folder its actually inside a folder within, cwm has to see the correct folder to restore correctly.Meaning if the file/rom is placed on sdcard like clockworkmod\backup\whatever folder\your rom for example you will likely get md5 mismatch correct way is clockworkmod\backup\your rom
