OMG! 9 hours to upgrade!!!

Hi all.
Just thought I'd let you know about my update.
I have an SGS2 on O2 UK. (obtained thru Phones4u).
Plugged my phone into laptop yesterday & was informed by Kies that a new firmware upgrade was available.
Great, I thought..............................!
After over NINE hours, various reboots, uninstalling & reinstalling Kies from Samsung website etc etc, I have now got a succesful upgrade.
What a complete headache!
Could someone just let me know if what I have is the latest Official version of everything? (after a lot of grief in the past with BlackBerry I am a bit adverse to using anything unofficial, so I want to try & keep it "clean") :-

Kies says my firmware is...PDA:KI4/PHONE:KI1/CSC:KH2(XEU).
My phone (under about phone) states:-
Android version 2.3.4
Baseband version I9100XXKI1
Kernel version 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKI4-CL575468
root@DELL143#2
Build number GINGERBREAD.XWKI4

So I have 2.3.4 do I? Wonder if it will make any difference after 9 hours of pain & suffering!:D

ur running KI4 which is one of the newest official firmwares available, and definitely the newest for ur region via Kies.. and yes, its 2.3.4, and its got a vasty improved battery life from anything that was 2.3.3.. although google video chat is still missing, i assume... and im very surprised it took so long though.. were u on a really slow network connection or something?

Welcome 2.3.4 fixes some bugs abd has better battery life. I do feel your pain tho as Im a Blackberry convert myself. But its the best move I've ever made.

At 1st I was hesitant about keeping it all official etc but I'm glad I've joined the DarkSide its pretty safe and the guys here know what they are doing so you cant go wrong.

Thanks for your swift replies. I think I had a few issues with Kies software. First of all it would hang after 20 minutes or so, then it would fully download the update but then lose connection with my handset. I followed a few threads on this forum, and made sure I fully uninstalled Kies before downloading again. That seemed to fix the problem.
Funny that you mention the improved battery life, as I have just bought a new battery from Amazon which has a larger capacity,(1900mah) so if the upgrade improves battery life, I should be onto a good thing!
I am trying to hold out moving over to the "Darkside" as anything to do with flashing, rooting,ROM, Odin etc totally baffles me. Plus, I love the way my new phone works so dont really want to change too much. (apart from getting rid of apps which have no use to me...Samsung hub etc!)

Excellent... I'm on O2 and have been waiting ages for this.

So I'm looking forward to plugging my phone to my laptop later to receive update goodness :)

Good Luck! Hope you have plenty of patience!

Does anyone know what other "improvements"/bug fixes are in 2.3.4 other than battery life gains?

To get rid of apps etc you do have to join the Darkside, but its worth it as you can get ride of all the apps you dont need even the ones you cant see. Also Odin is so much easier than Kies lol. it is baffling at 1st but you cant really go wrong if you use good advice which there is plenty

Thanks Riche101. Will give it some serious thought.
Just got to know where to start, and take the plunge!

Look out for hawker, ironass and Twinn all cool guys

You could get the 2..3.5 firmware if you wanted and the Siyah Kernal is worth it.

if you do Root its very easy to return it to stock etc if you need too send it in etc

Well that's strange....

I just connected to kies and it's saying my firmware is up to date.

But I'm still on 2.3.3.

Where you terhering to the laptop from the SGS2???

I'm hooking it up directly to the laptop and I'm running the latest version of Kies. I start Kies on laptop, connected my phone, Kies locks to my phone but it says I have the latest firmware... But I don't.

Current version - PDA:KF3/PHONE:KE7/CSC:KG2 (O2U)

To me the 'O2U' makes me think its O2 banded in some way and for some reason O2 branded handsets
don't have the 2.3.4 update just yet.
I got mine from Phones 4 U, there is no branding, no O2 on the boot screen etc..
As for the Kies update, it was just straight forward, it said there was a Kies update, did that, then it said there was a software update, did that. There was no uninstalling the old Kies, it just updated it. All over in no time :-)
