Do you think the Charge is bright? The saturation of the colors is deceiving. According to the link posted a few replies above, the Bionic is more than twice as bright as the Charge when objective measures are used. I'm sure the RAZR will be in the 300 range as well, while the Bionic is over 600. That only really matters if you need to use your phone in the sunlight frequently.

Never used a Charge, handled one in a store, and none of my friends picked one up, so I can't comment on the brightness aspect. I have seen the Bionic screen, both in store (pre and post RAZR) and through my friends, and that screen is just awful. I mean, it is a screen where the pixelation is so obvious that it makes you scratch your head. Even in store, I thought the RAZR's screen was leaps and bounds better than the Bionic, which was right next to it, in both brightness and quality.

That being said, if one of your use cases is going to be heavy outdoor usage (i.e., lots of direct sunlight), I can't say if the brightness of the RAZR would hold up, namely because I don't use my phone outdoors much to begin with. So I can see how it could be a potential deal breaker for you if you spend a large amount of time outdoors in direct sunlight.

Of course things are relative. I'd rather have bright and usable than dim with overly deep colors. Btw, my dx2 is both bright and has nice deep colors. my dx2 is brighter than the bionic and later released dx2's btw, and yes i have done comparisons many times to verify this. i believe moto went with a slightly different pentile display or tweaked settings to dim it slightly for some reason. I will say that in video reviews i have seen of the RAZR the display looked pretty bright, but if firsthand reports from people like the op of this thread are true, then i won't be getting this phone. I will know more once i see it in person tho.

Moto went with completely different pentile screen on Razr. It's Super AMOLED vs LCD in DX2, Bionic. The only thing they share is 4.3" screen size and qHD resolution. DX2, Bionic use RGBW pentile pixel structure, so it's transmitting more white light from backlight source through W subpixel. But it's getting more pentile artifacts and worse sharpness. SAMOLED on Razr uses RGBG pentile pixels, so it's got better sharpness and less pentile artifacts. But AMOLED basically has lower brightness than LCD with backlight.

So choose pentile LCD for outdoor brightness or SAMOLED for bettery clarity and color saturation. You can't have both yet.

I thought samoled+ was the technology that included no pentile but a striped subpixel design but was limited to the resolution it would display. The GS2 uses the samoled+ displays but all of them are stuck at WVGA.

Ok I like alot of people am beginning to get a little tired of hearing about the Brightness issues of Super Amoled.

Well here is probably the best video your going to see by Lisa from Mobile Tech Review with both the Bionic and Razr side by side...

FYI- Side by side shots at about 8:50 min through...

I'm sorry, but how does that put the issue to bed? The side by side shot is useless because of different backgrounds, and the phones were probably on "auto," with the Bionic possibly at 20% and the RAZR maybe using 80%. She says the Bionic is brighter, but the RAZR is good enough for outdoors. Good enough is subjective. There have been times when I thought the Bionic was barely bright enough when I was using it as a GPS in the redrock desert of Utah. If it isn't important to you, don't worry about it. If it is, go the store, disable auto, then put both screens to 100%. Hit the settings button and you will get a largely white screen with some black text. The RAZR looks a little grey and not super bright. The Bionic will make your eyes bleed....

The other thing to factor in is battery life. Inside, with the RAZR at 100%, it looks beautiful! I doubt many of us use the auto setting. I use the "Profiles" program and have the Bionic at 25% when indoors. I quickly switch it to 100% when I'm outside. If you keep the RAZR at 100%, you will probably need to turn it into a land line with the charging cord always attached. Turn it down to 25%, and make sure you are happy with the way that looks to you. I'm assuming that owners will have to turn it down to something in that range to make it through the day, unless AMOLED can get brighter with minimal increase in consumption (I don't know the answer to that).

I'm going to put this as lightly and nice as possible my man....Super Amoled is not ever going to be as BRIGHT and WHITE as an LCD, never ever! Its just not possible! That white is what kills your battery. Super Amoled is all about Deep Blacks!

As for pegging which one is brighter, and which phone is the farest of them all when you talk about brightness...The Bionic is the clear winner over just about any phone on the market...there is no doubt.

But I've heard alot of people say the screen is plenty bright on the Razr to be used outdoors. Engadget took all they're pics of the phone outside and the screen still looked very bright and colorful.

And to clarify...

I've used and owned phones that have had LCD's, Super LCD's, Amoled, Super Amoled and Super Amoled Plus screens...Honestly I happen to like the very deep blacks of the Super Amoled screens. Its a trade off! I'll take the grey/bluish whites on a Screen like the Razr has compared to the bright whites of the Bionic...2 totally different technologies, but also a matter of opinion and choice. I would say for you to get which ever one is going to fit your needs ...For many the Razr will be bright enough....some who prefer LCD will feel different.

Well she answered the key question; no issue seeing the display outside. I'm sure the bionic/atrix/photon is brighter in an absolute sense.

There are guys on the Bionic forum who are pissed at Motorola for releasing a new phone less than two months after the Bionic. I felt that way briefly. Now I applaud them, because they have given customers a choice of two different screen technologies (with different advantages), in two phones that are otherwise fairly similar (battery issue being the other big difference). It is a great time to be a consumer!

I was one of the angry ones heading towards the Motorola offices with a bunch of Angry Bionic owners armed with weapons like whiffle ball bats....lmaoooo

Peep my thread in Bionic land...
Motorola Just slapped us!

I still feel it was too soon for Motorola and Vzw to announce a flagship phone like the Razr so close to the release of the Bionic! We waited 9 months for the Bionic, that's a long time, and then to turn abound and drop a bomb like that..whew!
It was just interesting timing IMO.

However...Yes at the end of the day they can appeal to different people and give some a matter of choice when you speak about screens. I happen to think the majority will go for the newer, better built Razr though. Motorola really spared no expense or material building out the Razr.
