On my second Droid2 and it's DOA before activated

Verizon is switching my daughter's phone from HTC Eris to the Droid2 due to numerous trackball issues. First phone arrived last week and would not charge the battery. Got another phone today via FedEx and same story. Is the USB port to the Droid2 going to be as bad as the HTC Eris trackball issues? We are getting tired of having to return phones every other month.

It is a certified replacement phone. We got the phone last Monday, the battery, battery cover and charger came on Wednesday. Realized that the battery was not charging that night and called Verizon. They said that maybe I got a bad charger. Took it to the Verizon store Thursday to exchange chargers, but it turns out that the USB port is bad. Couldn't exchange the phone at the store (long story) so I called Verizon again. They sent another D2 which arrived today. That D2 would also not charge the battery, and thus since the battery is now depleted, the phone is also DOA.

With the Eris, I opened up a replacement phone and it turned out that that phone was in worse shape with the trackball issues than the one I was sending back.

Seems like there is no quality control on the refrubished phones.

not possible to specify a brand new one at the store?

my in-laws have had zero charging issues on their D2s...

VZW Essentially won't give you a new phone once you're outside of the 30 day exchange period. They just do Certified Refurbs. Even when you get a replacement from Asurion, after paying $7 a month, and a $90 deductible, you get a refurb phone. From reading on the forums, there's almost no QC on these refurbs, as many come to users damaged or malfunctioning. However, the other half work fine and as new. It's hit or miss. I've never heard of this problem with the USB port, though... Makes me wonder if the OP is doing something weird to them :p.

The third D2 just arrived this morning...DOA. It will not power up. Called Verizon and they are going to send another battery to see if that works. FedEx guy said that he sees Verizon phones going back and forth alot with people saying that they just would like Verizon to send a phone that works the first time.

You hit the nail on the head. I had 4 D1 replacements in about 4 months. The ones they sent me as replacements were worse than the original out of the box. I hope my D2 doesn't break as they will send me the D2G - which I DON'T want. And I am not nerdy enough for the R2D2 :D

Amen.

I put a EnV Touch and the LG Dare through the wash in the past 12 months ... I no longer keep my Droid 2 in my pant pockets. I don't want to risk getting a wonky one as a replacement.

You won't believe this, okay, maybe you will...

Verizon FedEx'd a new battery for the D2 and it arrived today. Put the new battery in the phone and let it sit for a while. Looked at the phone status in settings, about phone and the battery is not increasing in charge and the status says discharging.

Once again, I called Verizon and long story short, since it took a while to get the rep up to speed and on the same page, Verizon is sending a wall charger. I wish I had a combatible mini-usb charger to check out the phone without waiting.

So here is the stats
Three D2 none work
Two batteries, D2 still does not work
One wall charger, have not determined if it really works or not

So far the only thing that does work, LOL, is the battery cover.

Does nobody else you know have a phone with a microUSB charger? These are fairly common these days. You should be able to swap chargers and see what happens...

I went thru all the micro usb's in the house and none fit. No one near me has smartphones. I'll let Verizon waste it's shipping charges on me. In ten days, I have received six boxes and sent back two. I will need to send back three more boxes on Friday (fingers crossed)

I'm now on my third Droid 2. 1st one started freezing randomly and then wouldn't even boot, but luckily it was only three weeks after getting the phone, so it was still in the 30 day replacement thing. Second one would randomly restart through out the day (at least 20 times, randomly.) This one (3rd) has had no problems, yet. Sighh. But anyways, I feel your pain. Verizon must fail at actually CHECKING the phone before sending it out again. They must just say "oh it's on, sent."

sounds to me like a bad usb cable.

buy one at bestbuy or frys...plug it in to your computer and try that way.

My honest opinion is that this is an issue of pebkac. "problem exists between keyboard and chair". what that essientally means is that the user is the problem. I honestly find it hard that you have 3 / 4 phones with the same exact problem. by chance and statistics this is highly unlikely. try a different usb cable, try a different charger (again), do what you must but i dont feel everything is being done to rule out all possibilities. maybe you have bad electrical sockets. who knows.

"pebkac"
I almost spit out my oatmeal. Nice drop on the tech industry term.

I think this too because, realistically, microUSB connections should be the same, just an A and B.

It is not my error. The first phone was taken into the Verizon store, it WAS as phone issue. The second and third phones issue is undetermined. I don't have time to drive back and forth to the Verizon store everyday. So either the phones are junk or the wall charger is junk. I can't do a process of elimination without proper equipment to figure out which one is bad. Verizon will only send one piece of equipment at a time.

And guess what. Verizon sent me a new wall charger, but it was the WRONG one! I don't know how much more Verizon can screw up. They sent a travel wall charger in which you plug in your car charger into. I don't have that part. The D2 has not even be activated at this point and it has been nearly two weeks, eleven days to be exact.

Holy crap. I can see how you'd be frustrated. I've never had a bad experience with VZW yet (knock on wood), but this would piss me off pretty bad. I'd be at the VZW store demanding a brand new in box phone. You should try that. If you're calm, polite, rational, but forceful, I'll bet you they do it.

Did a little experimenting. I took the USB cord of the wall charger and plugged it into my computer with the new battery in the phone because it still had a charge. After selecting charge only, the phone was actually charging. Then I took the USB cord and plugged it back into the wall unit. The phone was discharging, not charging.

I did the same with the other D2 that I have not sent back yet. It charges via the computer yet not thru the wall unit. So the wall unit is what is defective.

Today Verizon sent a travel charger. It would not work for me because I do not have a car charger so verizon is now sending me a car charger because the wall chargers are out of stock (which is why they sent me a travel charger).

This is what Verizon sent me. Set Your Location

HowTF are the wall chargers out of stock? It's the same charger for the D1, D2, D2G, D2R2D2, and who knows how many other motorola phones... That's recockulous.

at this point i'd go to bestbuy and buy a charger from them. micro usb. or look for a wall charger that has a usb port meant for using usb cables.

ALSO e-bay

at this point, as hard as vz has tried, take the easy route.

Woo Hoo! Verizon finally sent the correct charger with a Saturday FedEx delivery. After 12 days, the D2 is fully charged and properly running!
