On screen notifications?

On my iPhone, one of the best things I liked about it was when an email or text message came in, it would put a pop-up on my screen (and turn on my screen if it was off) so I could quickly view what it was and whether it was urgent or not.

Does something like this exist for Android? I have a Nexus 4 running 4.2.2

Some apps (Whatsapp and google talk comes to mind) will do this in the app settings.

You can do something similar with an app called Lightflow. This app allows you to glance or simply listen to your phone and know exactly what you are being notified about via customized auido alerts and light notification colors (hardware dependent for light) for apps, contacts, etc.

And in the settings for each is the ability to to "enable pop up" and/or "switch screen on".

With Android, you can get notifications on your screen with various themes and for every program installed in your Android device. You can also get notifications for text messages on screen that let you type and reply into the popup box for a quick reply. You can also get extravagant popup with animations on them that make it look like a party is happening on your phone screen whenever you receive a notification.

I chose Notifier Pro and used a setting for it to slide down and show up at the top of the screen but there are alot of other screen placement options for it. SMS & Call notifications are activated by default with other notifications for other programs on your system as additional options.
