On Screen Push Notifications - confused iPhone deserter!!

mudrubble

Newbie
Hi guys,

I want to be able see my notifications ON SCREEN and have them demand some kind of input from me.

On iPhone I could set a reminder and when the time came it would wake up my screen, display the notification, demand input from me (such as click OK, go to the app, snooze the reminder, etc) or else persist and stay in my face. If my screen went to sleep, when I woke it back up, the notification was staring me in the face!

I

And, sorry, let me please add that I'm not looking to have emails, texts, whats app messages, or facebook updates pushed primarily so I'm not looking for an app that is limited to sending SMS to screens of locked phones, for example.

I'm looking to have reminders I set (do x at 2pm, do y at 3:30....) pushed to my main screen, so I need a solution that goes beyond email and SMS, etc.

Thanks in advance.

PLEASE HELP! I'm like a useless blob without reminders. I have no more memory so I really rely on this, as a previous iPhone user!

Check out the app slidelock. Native Android doesn't have a setting to wake up your screen to show notifications, but this app adds it. It's a paid app, but from what I hear, well worth it.

When you set up the app, you can tell it which apps to push notifications to your lock screen. If you select your calendar, or whatever other app you use for reminders, you should get the notifications the way you want them. Be sure to read up on the app for tips and tricks.

Thank you Mittar,

I actually installed an app called Screen Notification, and this aims to do the same thing. Since the install, the reminders do now make a short ringing sound, but that's all.

You feel that it will be different with Sidelock?

Also, my alarm clocks have no problem pushing active screens to my sleeping phone and demanding feedback before they will go away. I figure, if they can do it, why wouldn't my reminder apps be able to? Why wouldn't my alarm apps need Sidelock or Screen Notification?

I'm thinking the root of the problem must lie in the difference between how my alarm apps are pushing to my phone and how my reminder apps are pushing to my phone. I'm doubtful any app will fix it because it seems as though my phone is already capable of doing it but isn't set correctly.

What do you think?

I second what Mittar said. Slidelock will do what you are asking for. I tried it for a little bit, but got rid of it, because I personally DON'T want my screen to wake with new notifications.

Like Normal323, I don't want my screen activating for notifications. I sit in meetings with iPhone users and can easily read the entire text on their screen for whatever notification is pushed through. I don't use slidelock for this reason, so I can't answer your specific question. I would root around in the settings of your calendar for notification types. There might be a way to do it, as it sounds like the phone is capable of it.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Thanks guys. A quick question to both of you and anyone else:

Will Sidelock work with only specified apps? I don't want my SMS waking the phone either, but I do want my reminders to get things done (many have to do with work) to show. Sidelock allows this?

If it does, I got ripped off with my (free) purchase of Screen Notification!

And Mittar, you feel that whatever setting my alarm clocks are bypassing or set to beat would most likely be found in my calendar settings?

I've been through so many settings that the whole world looks like a cog wheel now but I didn't try Calendar.....

Slidelock is selective, you can select or de select whichever apps you want pushed. Here's a good review by phandroid's Chris Chavez.

If you do decide to try it, I recommend setting some time aside to test it out immediately, so that if you don't like it, you can return it before the trial timer ends.

I would definitely try your calendar settings. If you don't see anything in the general calendar settings, try opening a specific event and pawing through the settings there. Sometimes the settings offered are different for each layer (overall vs event). It can get overwhelming at times, until you get used to the general system that's in place, and then it's pretty intuitive.

So, I just played around with this on my GS3 (waiting for work to offer the GS5).

I set a task reminder, on both high and medium importance, and it dinged at me and put my reminder on screen. If the screen times out, it is the first thing I see if the screen is turned on.

Are you sure you're setting a reminder for the events? The default might not be to remind.

I'm definitely setting reminders! I have done so in 3 or 4 apps that I'm trialing to figure out which would be the best reminder app.

They all keep dinging (the nagging reminders keep kicking in) but they don't show on the screen. They even light up the screen, so they're definitely trying to remind me.....

This adds to my suspicion that it's a setting on my phone that the alarm apps are getting around and the reminder/to do apps are not getting around. My alarm clocks pushed these notifications long before I installed Screen Notification too, so it doesn't seem the phone requires this to be able to send push notifications on locked screens. Just like your test just showed.

So...... why isn't mine? I'll start with your suggestion of looking around the calendar and new calendar item settings..... but this almost proves that my phone is absolutely capable of doing this and I just don't know where the setting is.

Is there any Samsung tech guru who has a website that I could ask this to? Who would most likely be in a position where knowledge like this would be like the back of their hand?

Any suggestions?

I'll check the settings you suggest as well and hopefully I don't need to escalate this.... what a mess for a simple thing!

Thanks for all the help Mittar, you're golden my man.

I'm using the native calendar App that came with my GS3. If you open the app drawer, it's just called "Calendar."

I just saw that you're using 3rd party reminder apps, it might be something in those apps. I would test out the calendar task reminders to see if they work, and if they do, then you know it's the app that you're trying to use. Might be that Calendar is your best option...

Nothing in S-Planner that would help..... I can't believe something this small is causing this much of a problem for me. Especially when guys like you get it out of the box. Can I ask what app you used to push that notification to you? I'll test with the same app.

Thanks,

Hi Mittar,

I have already put all my apps in the app drawer into folders. Was this a bad idea?

Anyway, I've looked through all of them and haven't found anything called "calendar". I haven't deleted or hidden any apps (as I don't know how to) so I should be seeing them all.

Is there a way to search only my apps? OK Google searches images, the net, etc., but how do I search apps only?

Thx

The plot thickens.... I put an activity in my calendar (using S-planner as I don't see any other) and set it to remind me and, like in your case, it wakes my phone and does everything a reminder should do (has snooze and dismiss buttons at least)!

So alarms and calendar (s-planner) items push to my locked screen no problem. It's not the phone and not the settings on the calendar. It's something that all 4 of these apps must have wrong in common!

But what??

I'm starting to think you're right Mittar, it must be these apps. They must be programmed to push notifications to the notifications area only. Nothing is forcing them to do this, as other apps don't do it. So it must be some simply poorly written apps then?

I'll just have to find an app that was written to push notifications to screen and not to notifications area.

That's my analysis anyway. Unless you know something better.

Thanks immensely for your help, at least I know I'm not crazy, and I was beginning to ponder the possibility.....

You can find all of your apps in the app drawer whether or not you've put them in folders. It's the grid of dots icon on your home screen. You don't need to clutter up your home screen with all your apps as you can always just go into your drawer for your less used ones.

Sounds like slidelock might be worth a shot for you.

For the record, how I solved this was to use Business Calendar Pro and Calendar Event Reminder together to get very customizable pop up notifications from only the calendar(s) that I want.

I created a "Reminder" calendar in Business Calendar, and I schedule any event I actually want a reminder sent to me for in this calendar. This ensures I don't get a popup for every single event in my whole day, but only the ones I scheduled in the "Reminder" calendar. I can use templates based on any appointment created, and the reminder options are very flexible, actually as flexible as you want them to be.

Much better than having a dedicated reminder app is a calendar event with flexible repeating reminders. It's now very quick, efficient and customizable.

Thanks for all the help!
