Hello all, this is my first real guide to, well, anything. I hope you all like it and find it useful. If you have suggestions or wanna add something, don't be shy!
If your looking at this guide, then you have taken the first step into the odyssey that is the Android Rooting scene. Tis a fascinating journey, one I hope many of you learn from.
All right, to start, I DID NOT MAKE ANY OF THE CONTENT IN THE LINKS. I just though a one stop-shop for your rooting needs would be mighty useful. I am not responsible for what you do to your phone, and get used to hearing that, because its gonna be all over the place. This process, its a bit tricky. But with a little know-how, you can get it done in no time at all. (well, maybe not that quick)
But I don't think the actual process is hard, just finding all the information necessary and the components like the Android SDK are a little time consuming. If these things sound worthwhile to you, head on down below here to get started. Just remember: You are responsible for what happens to your phone. I was able to complete the process without a problem, and like I said, the setup is more time consuming than actually rooting.
I timed the actual rooting process for sh**s and giggles, took me 5 minutes, and literally, its just typing a couple of commands into a command prompt, which is pretty easy if you follow the guide in the link at the bottom of this page. So consider the risks and the benefits, and maybe you'll find that rooting is for you.
Did I forget about that link? I sure did...
How To: Root the HTC MyTouch Slide (Exploid Method) (Updated 09.28.10) | TheUnlockr
NOTICE: Make sure you do a factory reset of all of your data on the phone. Its in the settings. If you don't, then there's just gonna be a ton of space and data the ROM wont be able to access. Sorry, but those are the rules of the trade. If you want root, you gotta wipe your phone. And just to clarify, you wont lose any application you paid for, you can just re-download those. But your gonna have to hunt down all the free ones, and yes, this is a tremendous pain. I would recommend making a list of all your apps.
BTW: When its giving you the command line prompts to type, you will type the * you see, the only thing you do not is stuff (in parentheses like this). Matter of fact, you will type EVERYTHING it tells you to, character for character, unless, like I said, it is in (parentheses)
AND you do not have to flash the ROM it tells you to, in fact, do everything it says, but instead of the Stock ROM w/ Root, do it with this ROM instead

All your gonna have to do is BEFORE YOU LEAVE CLOCKWORK, FLASH THE gapps THE SITE GIVES YOU. So you'll flash the ROM, then RIGHT away, with out leaving, flash the gapps. Trust me, I did this, it felt weird, but the gapps is your Market, those things. You CANNOT go back and reflash em. It sounds scary, but take it from me: it aint. Here's a video of the flashing process. Because I love all of you.
Go to 7:07 if you wanna see what your gonna have to do. Homeboy.
Go straight to 7:07 at the video. It will look pretty much the same as your menu in clockwork, just the colors and the icon in the background will be different.
BTW, the ROM I gave you is not the only one out there, it just happens to be the one I use, and its been more stable for me than the version Cyanogen (the guy who made the ROM) made and calls "Stable". This ROM just seems to be... easier and more trustworthy to start off.
Need more advice, or need help faster than you can get here? (o nooes!)
This is a huge community of Hax0rs, many of which can help you. You can even find a different version of the root guide I gave you, but I would still recommend that one, as the guide I gave you guides you from setup to finish.

Props go to RavenWulf from XDA Developers.
1. download ROM to your computer and put it on your SD card without unzipping it.
2. go to market and download ROM Manager (not required if you have it)
3. open app (ROM Manager)
4. select "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" and tap myTouch Slide
5. select "Reboot into Recovery".
Phone will power down and boot itself in to recovery.
(when in recovery use volume button to scroll up and down, trackpad is enter and back arrow is back.)
6. select wipe data/factory reset
7. under "advanced" select "wipe Dalvik Cache"
8. go back to main menu
9. select "install zip from sdcard"
10. select "choose zip from sdcard"
11. scroll through list till you find your ROM and select it
12. after it is done installing go back to main menu and select "reboot system now"
If you need some reassurance that this method does indeed work, here is a post from XDA with the same steps, I just happen to think that the method above is much simpler to comprehend. Its what I used. Anyways, here's the link for the other guide.

Did you get root, made a backup, and then started deleting system apps and you want to get them back? Here's how! (Credit goes to Kelmar. Buy him a cookie)
Take the nandroid from your SD card and copy it to your desktop computer. It should be in the form of a .zip file. Using winrar (free trial HERE) double click on the zip file. DO NOT EXTRACT ANYTHING.
Navigate to /system/app and drag and drop the .apks to your SD card.
Once on your SD card use a file manager such as "Root Explorer" to copy the .apks from the SD card back into the /system/app folder.
Ever heard of a2sd, a2ext, or something like that, but you had no idea what is is? Well, now you do!

Go to post #7 for an explanation that will answer any question you might have about a2sd
And here's where you would go if you want to do it. It has a link with the package you need, and if you installed CyanogenMod like I said to, all you have to do is flash the package, and follow the terminal instruction's at the bottom of the first post.

Here's a tip for winners: once you achieve root, use ROM Manager to make backups, and do it often. When I used some ROMs, I would find that my mobile data would just... stop working. That is until I restored from my handy dandy backup. I would suggest making a backup on maybe like a weekly basis, or if your really daring, one every two weeks. I would strongly suggest making an investment in a bigger SD card too, but thats just me.
If you want me to help you out, if I need to clarify something, or if you have a suggestion, PLEASE, do not hesitate to say something!
If rooting seems too daunting of a task, think it over, and if the benefits outweigh the risks to you, then by all means, go for it. Shoot for the stars, and you just might get there one day.
