I would try sending the dev an email and explain your situation. I have had good experiences when I have reached out to them. They may get you the file, or update the app so you can get it from the market. At least you'll know you have a good copy of the file.
You could also try Getjar as sometimes you can get apps there that aren't available in the Play market without having to worry about malware.

If you live in the US, the Amazon App Store is also an alternative method to getting files.
