Help Only a single core ?

Looks like the HTC Evo V will come out with a SINGLE core not a DUAL core proccessor. Bummer - Prepaid Cell Phone Plans | Unlimited Data | No Contract | Virgin Mobile

I was jealous that virgin mobile was getting the first dual core prepaid phone. But I guess we need to wait much longer to start seeing them head over to Boost and Virgin.

I couldn't find virgins site say only single core. I got tired of so many different claims that I am just waiting it out until I have this phone in my hands. All I can do is hope for dual core.

This whole single core fiasco reminds me that we live in a new era... a time where anything written on the internet must be true. Forget common sense.

Its a rebranded EVO 3D CTIA 2012 had this phone did a preview of it seen the spec sheet of it having a dual core chip

think of it this way.

HTC already has a manufacturing line set up to manufacture the EVO 3D, this means the equipment is already paid for.

to resell that same phone with a single core, it would have to be re designed from the inside, requiring all new manufacturing methods and equipment, that costs money, and drives up the cost of the phone.

its cheaper for HTC, for Virgin, for Sprint, to use the EXACT same EVO 3D and just make the software updated.

so yes, it WILL be the same evo 3D with daul core and 3d cameras.

virgin mobiles site may not say dual core but the phones 3D view definately shows the 2d-3d switch, and a single core cpu would not be able to handle that kind of video processing needed to make that work.

so everyone just calm down, besides when it comes out, go to your local radioshack and have them open up a box so u can turn it on and mess with it. thats what i did before i bought my optimus V and before i got my Triumph. and im gunna do that thursday before i plunk down 300 for this thing

I just ordered the phone from VM's website. This is pasted from the chat with a live agent:

You: The EVO V 4G is a dual core processor phone? The website does not specify.
Sarah: Yes the EVO V 4G has a dual core 1.2 processor.

ill have mine in hand before 3:00 pm so ill know for sure.. but i would bet anything it will have dual cores.

It's dual core, 1.2 ghz processor. It's the exact same phone as the HTC Evo 3D. I don't understand why people start these silly rumors. It contributes nothing. SAME PHONE!

For whatever reason they'd do this (I don't know why they would) it is possible to disable a core via software. I remember there being made a big deal about Intel/AMD doing that for a couple of their processors a while ago. If you bought like the dual core processor, you'd literally be getting the same as the quad-core, but for less money. And 2 cores were turned off. So what people were able to do was via software turn them back on somehow. So you could get a cheap quad-core CPU for the price of a dual core.

So I'm assuming it's POSSIBLE that they did this on the EVO, but why in the heck would they? And even if they did, I'm sure it would be able to be turned back on via a root app/ROM.

The reason AMD would do that was a manufacturing technique. Whenever chips are made, there are always ones that don't pass the checkout. If one of the cores was bad, they would simple disable it and sell it as a triple core chip instead of having to trash the whole chip. Same with Dual core. That is why enabling the disabled cores was dangerous and not suggested.

The difference in clock speeds is a similar thing. Chips are tested for how hot they get at various speeds. the various clock speeds of a single chip design are all the same processors, it's just that a chip sold at a higher clock speed made it to that higher speed without failing their the heat requirements. The lower clock speeds chips couldn't make it that far.

But those are with pc cpus. It's not financially viable to completely make the phone different.

I too was wondering if like most reviews have indicated that the HTC EVO V 4G is identical hardware as the HTC EVO 3D. The reason why I questioned this was two fold;

1) The Virgin Mobile website says this phone has a 1.2GHz processor. No mention of dual core. One would think they would want to play this up.

2) In a Motorola Triumph support forum, a MotoEXPRT claimed that the HTC EVO V 4G was a watered down HTC EVO 3D with less memory and a single core processor.

After the debackle with the Triumph, I wouldn't put it past VM to put cheaper guts in their HTC offering. Glad to hear it's really the same hardware as the 3D.

Don't be surprised if almost all the new phones keep that Sprint silk screen on the front.

They are just using the same parts for the Evo 3D.
The only thing they are doing is programming it with Virgin Mobile software.

It's cheaper just to continue to use parts they've technically already purchased.

Yes it comes with a dual core! i have the phone and when i go to about phone and hardware info, it says 1.2 duel core.

:D

According to Intel (obviously they are competing against Mobile chip makers and they have to say this when they have only single core Atom processor for Mobile phones in the market) Android OS and Apps for Android OS are not yet fully optimized for Multi core processors.

Intel: Android not ready for multi-core CPUs | ZDNet

However, once Android OS and Apps start optimizing for multi core processors then we will se benefits such as:

Faster Web page load times

  • Lower power consumption and higher performance per watt
  • Higher quality game play experience for advanced console-style mobile games
  • Highly responsive and smoother UIs (user interfaces)
  • Faster multitasking
