Is there an app or setting for the Hero that would alert you to the fact you are in an open source wifi spot?

If you go Settings > Wireless Controls > Wi-Fi Settings there is an option "Notify me when an open network is availible"

Open network?? Could you explain this Vido.Ardes?? Does this mean a free Wi-Fi connection or just a Wi-Fi connection that aint passworded????

Open just means not passworded, but usually if there is a public network you have to pay for, all you do is "buy" the password off the owner of the network to access the internet. In short if there is no password, no one can charge you for using it.

Couple of useful apps if youre looking for open wifi hostpots:

wifi analyzer - really easy to use with a nice graph showing signal strengths, channels etc. Worth having just so you can see the best channel to use on your router at home.

G-mon - bit more of a hardcore wardriving geek version of the above, not as user friendly but much more detailed info available, plus a mapping function showing the locations of hotspots.
