Apps OpenGL ES 2 creating a temporary texture/surface

Hi,
I need a way of creating some kind of temporary texture or surface in OpenGL that I can write to and then display it to the screen.

The reason for this is because I have a lot of images to display on-screen at once that wont change often (a tiled map) and I don't want to loop over each image every time a frame is drawn as it will be very slow.

I previously achieved this using a large Bitmap, drawing to it by getting it's Canvas and then drawing the Bitmap to the screen. Does anyone know how I could do a similar thing using OpenGL?

I have been trying out OpenGL ES 2 and have managed to get a textured square on screen but that is as far as I have got.
