Help Opening email documents

Hi, my ZTE Axon 7 won't allow me to open any documents from my Gmail account. When I try, it says it was unable to download the file. How can I fix this please?

First thing I'd try is using a web browser verify that file attachment is valid. Go to https://mail.google.com , log into your account, and see if you can download and open the attachment.
If it's not OK, ask the sender to resend it to see if that works out. If it is OK, getting back to your ZTE which email app are you using?

Just checked the attachment and it's valid. I'm using the Gmail app. Any advice on how to proceed welcome.

What kind of attachment is it -- jpg, zip, etc? Also, have you ran into this problem before or is this the first time?
Another thing to try is since you could download the file via webmail is to just resend it to yourself as an attachment in a new email message to see if the Gmail app can access/open it.

I sent the file to myself but it still doesn't open in the Gmail app. It's a word doc but Im looking for a solution that works for all attachments, or at least a few.

That file should be accessible using Google Docs (you can use Google's 'Drive' app).

Or maybe look into Microsoft's mobile version of Office for Android:
