Hi, all i have had this phone for 10 months and it has never been updated ,can it be updated its never been routed any advice please thank,s Alf,,;););););)

Hi there Alf.....how did you resist the temptation up to now, as in rooting and flashing a custom ROM??

First thing to do is to give your phone permanent root, as in root which will stick!!

I would recommend the modified Z4Root, which can be downloaded here:

Permanent root for 2.2 Blades! - Android @ MoDaCo

This will work for all Android 2.1 and 2.2 phones, I think yours will still be Eclair 2.1, if it is the original Orange San Fran......and it will still be Gen 1.

Next, you should download Rom Manager from Market, linked......this will allow you to install a ClockworkMod Recovery on your phone, which is essential for flashing new custom ROMs, making Back-ups of existing set-up, etc

When you install the Rom Manager, there is an option to Flash the latest ClockworkMod Recovery........do not do this, as it will be Gen 2.

There is an option in Rom Manager to flash other, earlier, CMR versions....this is what you will have to do. One of the last Gen 1 compatible CMR was 3.0.1.4, so that is what I would flash.

A word of warning though, rooting your phone will invalidate your warranty, but this can be overcome by flashing a Stock ROM, if needs be. But just so you know!!!!

The next thing will be up to you really, as in do you have any preference for a particular ROM?

There are now a lot of 2.2 and 2.3 Roms available, so I would research which of these suits your particular needs, I will link to the Modaco thread which contains all the custom Roms out there, so you may need to do a little reading there before you decide!!!

By all means come back if you have problems or questions, but getting rooted, and installing ClockworkMod Recovery are a good start.

Cheers, Danny

OK Alf.

no probs...... I know the feelin man :-)

any pros, just post here.

Danny (57y/o and feeling every day of it ) :-\

Danny

I'll be doing it for me Dad!!

Is it OK for it to be done on a Mac?

And what ROM do you use

That'll be fine with us

Fair play to ya son ;)

Jazuz, I wouldn't use a Mac, except in a rain-storm or a day-time cinema :p

That's like using an iPhoney.....Joke, Joke, seriously.....:)

Of course use any Computer you have, but there is not a lot to do on the puter......you could use the Blade for everything outlined in my post, even the Stock Orange has Browser, etc.

If you are familiar with flashing ROM's, I would recommend going the TPT route, to change from GEN1 to GEN2, and install Ginger Stir Fry, or Cyanogen.

Just check out on Modaco, here:

Gen1 to Gen2 TPT upgrade - Android @ MoDaCo

I would recommend the Ginger Stir Fry Beta 27 Gen1 to Gen2 Upgrade TPT, as it does everything you could want, updates to Gen2, installs the latest GSF Android 2.3, with the new overclockable kernal, etc, and installs a Gen 2 ClockWorkMod Recovery, all in one go.

But, important, do follow the instructions to the letter.....I will quote them here, as they are vitally important:

Instructions
Copy a Gen2 rom zip file to your sd card ready to install.

Check the md5sum of that against the source (you can use AFV for this).

AFV is available on Market

Unzip this Gen2 TPT zip file to your sd card, it should create an image directory.

Check the nandroid.md5 file in the image directory on your sd card using AFV on your phone (long press on nandroid.md5 file, then Verify Nandroid Backup)

Power off, wait a few seconds, then power on with menu & vol+ held.

It should take a few seconds to flash the new Gen2 firmware (you should see some green text), then it should reboot into ClockworkMod recovery, use that to wipe data & then install your Gen2 rom.

Once installed, remove the image directory from your sd card, to prevent accidentally reinstalling. Once you have installed this just vol+ & power on will send you back into tpt mode if there is an image directory, even if you needed menu & vol+ before.

I am still using Swedish Spring 5, Gen 2.....it suits my needs perfectly.

But once you are up and running on GSF, if you don't like, there are numerous other choices, which you would flash using ClockworkMod.

just a wee bit of advice. download Mr Pigfish from the market.
all it does is tell u if the phone is gen1 or gen2
just to be sure :-)

Thanks Guys

Just read through the instructions and it looks OK!!

But what can I use to back up my Data??

Contacts ETC, this is what I would most want although they are on my Sim Card so I should be safe Yeah??

And could I do All this on the SF??

ROM ETC??

the contacts should be sync'd with ur google account anyway m8+yeah u can do it all using the phone :-)

Hi Everyone!!

The San Francisco is a GEN1

The only thing I need to keep is Dad's Fone Numbers Which are on his SIM (Can I ROOT And ROM without the SIM Installed??)

I can easily re-download his Apps as he don't use loads,

Now the big question, can one of you guy's put me on the track to ROOT/ROM the easiest way?

And if GEN1 To GEN2 is the better option

Also which is the best ROM??

And the last silly question, will the Market still Work once Rooted/Rommed

Thanks for all your Input's they are Appreciated

Renniks (Lee)

the market will work fine m8+should be included in the rom.

im using Swedish Spring rls5 which is for gen1 or gen2 and is android version 2.2
