Be legitimate and purchase the mobile hotspot service from Sprint....or root the handset and install wireless tether. Removes the need for the router all together.

Basically the way the mobile hotspot and wireless tether works is that your handset provides the data connection, and the software on your phone uses the wifi chipset in your phone to broadcast a signal that you can connect multiple devices to. It will assign an IP address automatically, you won't need additional hardware unless you're using a router as a repeater (running dd-wrt or what not). The paid way is much simpler and Sprint can support you if you have issues. The rooted way running wireless tether is unofficial, and you won't get any support from Sprint...and the instructions can be found in the Optimus S - All Things Root portion of the forum.

the netgear router i have will not work with the sprint connection even if i have the ipaddress? i am going to use the router as a repeater so i have sprint internet all of the time without paying sprint extra money?

I don't know why you keep mentioning Sprint's IP address. It's irrelevant. Your phone gets its data from Sprint through its 3G/4G radio which connects to Sprint's 3G/4G cellular network. Your Netgear WiFi router doesn't have a 3G/4G cellular radio, right? So your Netgear router can't get data directly from Sprint because it has no way of communicating with Sprint's 3G/4G cellular towers.

If you want to use your phone's 3G/4G data connection on your PC, without a USB tether, you can do so by enabling WiFi Hotspot (also known as WiFi tethering). In that case, your phone will get its Internet data connection using it's 3G/4G radio, and will share its data connection with nearby PCs by acting like a WiFi router. You can either pay Sprint for Wifi Hotspot functionality or you can root your phone and get WiFi Hotspot functionality for free.

If the WiFi Hotspot signal from your cell phone isn't strong enough to cover your whole house, you may be able to set up your Netgear router to act as a repeater (depending on the model of your Netgear router). Or you could buy a WiFi repeater.
