Root Orange Desire Worries

RichE

Lurker
Hi Guys,

I have an Desire on the UK Orange Network...

I rooted last week and encountered no issues whatsoever...

I'm a cautious Noob (there's no hurry) and have been busy doing a bit of the old due diligence before i flashed my first ROM. I've come across a lot of threads where Orange users have encountered various issues from lost WI-FI to corrupted radios...

I think this is what i want to achieve:

1. Get rid of all the Orange pre-installed apps
2. Get OTA updates direct from HTC and not Orange!
3. Over Clock and partition the SD for optinum space and performance.

Not crazy about flashing any custom ROMs although LeeDroid has been suggested and I may try this out later.

Can anyone steer me in the right direction and do i have to S-off considering that i'm with Orange...

Kind Regards
RichE

Rooting and updates from HTC don't go hand in hand. If you're rooted you can't get updates from HTC without screwing the phone up.

The only way you'll get what you want is:

1. Debrand to a stock HTC ROM and use that, or;
2. Root and flash a custom ROM which will be updated by the Dev as and when HTC release a new version

I had an Orange branded Desire and did pretty much exactly what you are looking at doing.

There are essentially two seperate processes here - de-branding and rooting.

De-branding involves putting a standard (stock) HTC ROM onto your phone which will then be devoid of all that Orange cr@p that no-one wants or uses.

Look at the threads on making goldcards and de-branding for info on this, I used this guide as well:

de-branding desire

In theory having made your goldcard and put the stock ROM on your phone, you will then get HTC updates instead of Orange, however the latest update which was released did not install on de-branded phones, and as far as I know this issue is still unresolved.

To install any custom ROM's you would need to root the phone. This gives you much greater freedom to try different ROM's and also get control over more of the phone functions. There are ROM's available (like leedroid) which work pretty much like stock sense, but with the added bonus of apps on the sd partition and other improvements.

No idea what s-off or s-on actually means, I'm sure someone else can help with that...

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all your help. Have just created a Gold Card using your instructions... It went like a dream...

Now i want to Flash an HTC Stock ROM.

EddyOS, I noticed that you left some links for me:

HTC Desire - ROM: eMIUI 1.01.14 (FRG83D) | Radio: 32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27 / RIL | Kernel: Couttstech 2.6.37 OC1113 FroYo BFS BFQ SLQB | HBOOT: 0.93

It seems to be in 4 pieces... Do i have to flash them one by one and if so, in what order? Sorry for being a proper NOOB but always thought that a ROM consisted of x1 bit of software that had to be flashed. Still eager for the latest HTC Desire stock ROM.

Is there a flashing guide that you would point me to?

Kind Regards
RichE

You should only need to flash the ROM. So far I've taken my Orange branded Desire to stock HTC, LeeDroid, GingerVillin and back to LeeDroid without ever touching the radio or kernel.

If you want to be sure look in settings, about phone, software information. If your baseband version is

32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27

then you have the same as mine and I can assure you that it will work fine.

Edited to add:
I found this guide helpful for de-branding.

That's my forum signature highlighting my current setup ;)

Agggghh, my attention to detail stinks...

Sorry Guys and Thanks for all your help!

Will start flashing soon but before that am going to get the phone unlocked by Orange to avoid any issues that i have read about...

Orange charge you

Remember that the latest isn't always the best. 32.48.00.32U_5.10.05.30 is the Orange baseband and I found recently that RIL wont work my current flashed radio.
