Root OTA Blocked But How?

Alright, here is an interesting one for all of you. My Nook Color is still running 1.4.1 and I have done nothing. Looking in com.bn.device.fota.mode I find that the value is set to "auto" but ROM Manager says that my ROM is not set up to receive OTA Updates. Now this is not a problem for me as I am not having to re-root my NC for every update but I would certainly like to duplicate whatever I did on my wife's NC as that updated to 1.4.2 and 1.4.3 and I will have to re-root it again (as soon as I can find out if I need to change versions of Manual Nooter).

A curiosity I know but any thoughts would be welcome. Thanks.

Edit: Just so a throw-away line in a post over at the xda forums that says installing CWM on the Nook itself will stop OTA. I have done this with mine so possibly the simple solution.

Rom manager has nothing to do with B&N OTA's. It's there for custom roms that support that feature. I've never seen one that did tho.

CWM by itself will not prevent the OTA from trying to install. I have a buddy at work who has rooted his phone and the OTA would reboot his phone and try to install, but would fail due to a custom recovery (cwm).

I had an OTA for my Nexus 7, that failed to install because of a custom recovery (TWRP). I had to install it manually from recovery after running root-saver to preserve root. Good thing too since it lost root. :D

I think there's an update.apk that might have been renamed OR changing the version in the build.prop.
