I have the zip file. I know doing it over the air it'll soft brick it. What about flashing the zip?

If you're going to be rooting and flashing roms, I would stay away from the update. It installs a new radio version that will cause boot loops when you try flash a custom rom or kernel.

What about just manually moving the right file for the battery display update

Moved to All Things Root since it pertains to rooting.
BTW if you try moving files around make sure that you do a nandroid backup first.

Also, what about removing the radio.apk, and then flasbing
