I can receive mail OK on my HTC One but every time I try to send I get "Mail has stopped unexpectedly Would you like to send error report to HTC". Did that lots but to no avail. Any ideas please?

Yes, just tried using Gmail app, that worked fine. I deleted and reinstalled the btinternet one but still not working

When you say you deleted and reinstalled "the btinternert one" do you mean the default included email app? It's very unusual to be able to do that with a OEM app.
Anyway, whatever app you were using seems to be trashed. Why not just use another app that works like Gmail, K-9, Maildroid or AquaMail?
