Root Overclocking advice?

Sorry if this is in the wrong place...

So I've got my Android rooted and running a port of Cyanogenmod 9. Ive found that this rom has some experimental features built in such as software overclocking. I know the risks of overclocking on a computer but are they the same as a phone? The phone being a LG Optimus S LS670 which by default is clocked at 600 mhz. Ive used the software to boost it up to about 768 mhz in order to watch videos (with this rom this phone struggles to play high quality videos) but I'm always worried that something might happen. Any advice? The software has the option to go up to about 860 or so..

I'm using the Altonus ICS on my OG Droid.

The overclocking in mine has an option to keep the overclocking across reboots. Does yours have that? If so, make sure that it does NOT restore the overclocking across reboots. If you have a lockup and the power button does not work, then pull the battery and you should be OK on the next reboot.

As with all overclocking, go conservative at first and see how it works. If it's fine, then try the next speed up and so on.

I haven't had a lockup at 1GHz. I seem to go a long time between lockups at 1.2GHz and the phone has a tendency to get hot. I've gone with max 1GHz. I usually use the ondemand CPU governor but if I'm doing something where I need responsiveness, I change it to the performance governor. I haven't figured out what the other governors do yet.

Thanks for the reply! And sorry mine's so late, I haven't had much time.
The rom I'm using right now actually does have the "Set on boot" option but I've had problems in the past on other devices with options like that so I wasn't planning to touch it ;)
Right now I've got it overclocked to 787mhz which is 187mhz over the stock clock speed. I'm still being very cautious about temperature changes but I can't really tell what temperature I should stay away from. I've been reading about people's phones getting up to 50
