Overheating

Lately my phone has constantly been "cooling down" and worse "closing apps because it is overheating".
Now my phone has started shutting off due to overheating.

I guess there is something causing it to overheat. I don't think I have excessive apps. How can you determine what is causing it to overheat, and how can you fix it?
 
hard to say exactly because I switch them sometimes. This phone is about 23 months old. One of the batteries I use is that old. But I bought a few new ones a while ago. I can't remember exactly how old this specific battery is. But you think battery wear could play a part?
 
Yup. Depends on charging patterns too. Li-ion batteries are better being topped up, not fully drained and charged to 100%.
