Help Pandigital Novel 7 - battery icon not there

I Just received a Pandigital Multimedia Novel 7 as a gift. It is a "remanufactured" version. I plugged it and am waiting for it to charge. But the battery icon is not appearing. Instead, there is a small white zig zag like a lightning bolt, next to a red (orange?) exclamation point. I do not think my device is actually charging and I have NO IDEA what to do. I went to the Pandigital.net site, but I keep getting an error at their site, that looks like this:

The white zig zag is the "charging" indicator in Android... so it IS charging. What happens when you turn the tablet on and disconnect the power cable?
