Root Partially rooted Verizon S5

PeterC57

Newbie
Hi,

Ok, so quite a while ago I had successfully rooted my S5. At some point I really started worrying about not getting security updates (and didn't want to deal with flashing a new rom) so I restored some of the files I had modified but accidentally left the one file that allows writing to the SD card in its modified state.

I then successfully unrooted but still can't install any updates because of that remaining modified file. And now there appears to be no way to reroot it and fix the file problem.

Now, I'm getting a new Note 7 next week and so want to give my S5 to my wife. However, she's not quite as careful as I am about strange emails, links, etc and so don't want to give her a phone that's not as protected as it could be.

What are my options ? Will a factory reset fix the issue ? Is there a way to flash it now and then get back on track ? Buy her a new phone ? :-)

Version: 4.4.2
Kernel version: 3.4.0
Build number: KOT49H.G900VVRU1ANE9

Any other pertinent information I need to post please let me know.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Peter

Hi,

Well, the Repair tool didn't go so well. It spun its wheels for almost 3 hours and then died with a Device Disconnected error.

Now I have a permanent "Software Update Failed" with a yellow triangular sign in the middle of the screen and I can't even turn the phone off. There is also some text in the upper left corner that starts with 'ODIN MODE" in red letters.

Subsequent runs of the Repair Assistant just sit there and will not connect to the phone.

Do I have any options or is this phone dead forever ?

Thanks !

Peter

Sorry the repair tool didn't work. Should be able to remove the battery and wait a few seconds then replace to get it to turn off.
If you can get it into download mode from off, press and hold volume down+ home + power till it boots, you can manually flash with Odin.
At the bottom of the download link are instructions for flashing.

Create a free account at Sammobile. Free download is slow, about 30 to 45 min but best place for stock firmware. I would try the link for the 6.0

Hi,

Ok, file is downloading now.

However, in reading the instructions I want to clarify:
"Add the firmware file to AP / PDA"
Will there be a browse option when running the Odin program ?

If I get to this point and it's not patently obvious can I just Cancel and possibly avoid further damage ?

Thanks !

Peter

Yes, when you click on the AP tab it will let you navigate to the file after you have unzipped it.
Hopefully you can make a connection to Odin. If it connects, you will get a blue box with a com port number in the upper left corner.
Once you have selected the file to flash and Odin is satisfied that everything checked out OK, you will get a start button.

Still strange that the repair tool failed. Usually takes about 30 to 40 min for it to backup your data and then flash the firmware and restore data.
Are you using the OEM cable and it seated good on both ends?
If on a laptop use a 2.0 port and on a desktop a port on the back.
Only time I have ever had a problem with the tool was when power blinked and my router rebooted.

Hi,

Yes, was using the original usb cable (the one with the double sized connector) connected to my laptop - probably some noob mistake I made. Is that avenue closed forever now that the phone gets stuck on that warning screen ? I would think I'd rather use the 'official' Verizon/Samsung version if possible?

Thanks,

If you can get it to flash with Odin, you should be good to go. The fact that the Verizon tool does not connect to it now kinda worries me.
The download from Sammobile will be official Verizon firmware, the same that the tool would use.
The update repair tool to me is just easier. Connect the device and once it is recognized, click repair. Don't have to select or download the firmware since it does it for you.

Ok, a question I should have asked before - the instructions say "wait few minutes"...How many is a few ? I would assume it's the same 30-90 the Repair tool but since there's no progress bar I thought I'd ask.

Right now the Odin screen says "SetupConnection..." and my phone has the green android with a "Downloading... Do not turn off target!!" message in the middle of the screen. The AP option is checked and it has the md5 file name next to it.

It's all been that way for about 20 minutes. Is this normal ?

Thanks,

P

If you have the blue box indicating a connection with Odin and the file selected in the AP slot, should only take 10 to 15 min for Odin to be satisfied and the start button ready to be selected. Hit start and should be able to see progress in lower left of Odin screen.

Ok, it took much less than that for the Start button to become enabled. It's now been about 40 minutes since i clicked Start with no change to the screen other than all 3 buttons being disabled. There is no progress bar anywhere to be seen.

The start button will be grayed out until Odin is ready. When the start button background is white, you can hit start.

Has anything changed on the PC screen? Should be showing what it's doing in the lower left and a green progress bar above the com box

Ok, I'm pretty sure it became enabled (right when it displayed SetupConnection) and I clicked it already probably 50 minutes ago. Is some other status text supposed to be showing in the Log box ?

Ok, so something is probably wrong then - nothing has changed on the screen since it displayed "SetupConnection", the buttons become enabled and i clicked on Start.

How to safely kill this and maybe try another port ?

Everything looks normal. It should start the flashing process when you click the start button.
If you are not seeing any progress beyond the Setup Connection, not flashing and you should be able to unplug the phone and either Reset or Exit Odin and start again.
Do you have Kies installed on the same PC?

No, no Kies installed. I just unplugged, moved to a different port, reset Odin, added the file to AP and it's now showing "<ID:0/006> SetupConnection..". No progress bar. How long should it take for that to show up ?
