Root Partially rooted Verizon S5

You should start seeing progress right away. Haven't seen one that would connect to Odin, active com port, and not flash. Figured you would at least get a failure message.

Yeah, I have this affect on computers/software - rarely do things go well :-)

Anyway, I rebooted my laptop and tried the same Port as last time and it got a little further, but still showed FAIL! in red. the Log box showed:

<ID:0/006> SetupConnection..
<ID:0/006> Can't open the serial(COM) port.
<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 1)

Nothing changed on the phone.

Should I try the first Port (I think they're all USB 2.0) again ?

Try flashing the Verizon firmware, below, for Lollipop, Android 5.0, instead of the old Android 4.4.2 firmware, NE9, as shown in your screenshot, as the bootloader may not allow downgrades. See if that helps.

The Verizon Android 5.0 firmware can still be rooted. If root is not required, then you could flash the latest Verizon Marshmallow, Android 6.0.1, firmware...

Ok, I will try that. Download started and will pick it up in the morning.

Thanks for all your help - definitely above and beyond the call of duty !

I don't think the firmware is the issue since you listed NE9 as your current firmware in the first post. You should be able to flash what is currently on the device or higher version so you are not trying to downgrade.
It's acting more like a communication problem between the phone and the PC.
If you get the same outcome with the newer firmware, try uninstalling all Samsung USB drivers and reboot PC.
Download Kies3 to get all Samsung USB drivers.
Kies and Odin don't play well together so uninstall Kies but keep the drivers.
Reboot PC and try flashing with Odin again.

Hi,

Ok, tried all that USB and Kies stuff and still no joy. Funny that even after I explicitly installed the Samsung driver it still went and got some sort of update from Windows Update. So, yes, it did appear to be some sort of conflict with the USB on the PC. Weird.

Anyway, I then grabbed my wife's Win10 laptop, moved everything over there and it all worked flawlessly the first time. Aargh :-) So, even though rooting it again had appeal to me I decided to go with 6.0.1 because it will be my wife's phone and she doesn't need anything like that.

Btw, if she decides to upgrade I won't be able to go back to 5.0 ?

Again, much THANKS for all the patient help !

Peter
