Partners To Ship Ubuntu Phones

Meizu is interesting, because they do their own fork of Android, called Flyme, and they're a major manufacturer as well. So they'll be doing Ubuntu phones as well as their Flyme ones

Cool, good to see some progress on this front :)

I've played with some of the early builds of Ubuntu on my Nexus 4, and it's a very, very pretty OS. Major stability and usability issues though - at least as of last week. It's fun to play with anyhoo :D

Since Ubuntu Touch is Linux - once it's released do you know if it will be more like Linux, in the sense that you could install the same ROM on most phones, or more like Android where each phone needs a ROM specific to that phone model?

It will likely still be device-specific. Desktop Linux is able to be installed across a wide range of hardware because it includes drivers for a wide range of hardware; mobile distributions (like Ubuntu Touch) aren't able to include all of the necessary drivers to work with the huge variety of hardware in mobile devices.

Anyone brave enough can give it a whirl on their Nexus (4, 7, 10, Galaxy Nexus) device: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/Install

Or I recommend trying it out in a dual-boot environment using the super-handy-and-almost-magical MultiRom app.

As anyone who reads the Computers board knows, I'm about as die-hard a fan of *buntu as they come...but I just can't get worked up about Ubuntu phones. Oh, I wish them well and everything, but for me, personally, I think I'm just too content with Android to want to switch things up.

Of course...I do change my mind at times...so you never know! :D

My biggest issue with Ubuntu Touch right now (well, stability and app availability aside) is that I'm just way, way too invested in the Google/Android ecosystem. All my contacts are there, all my email is there, my calendar is there, my apps are there, my files are there... Unless/until UT gets significant Google integration or support (as it stands, the Gmail app forces me to sign in each and every time I want to check my mail), I won't be able to use it as a daily driver.

I have the same issue with Firefox OS, but its nature as a web-centric OS makes accessing web app forms of the popular Google products not quite as painful.

I too am a huge long time Linux enthusiast, on the desktop/laptops I use. As far as on a smartphone, I'm so happy with Android and my Nexus 5, I'm going to take a wait and see approach. That's today's position anyway.

As one who has a few lines and multiple smartphones, being the hopeless tech addict I am in a cross platform environment, I just might buy one straight away...:)

Yes, 2 companies that I have never heard of. haha, but still, it's great that they are getting into the market now.

I don't think Meizu has any presence in the US. Very popular in China, and do have their own stores. Think their largest export market is Russia. I did visit the Meizu HQ in Zhuhai about 3 years ago. Wouldn't buy one of their Flyme phones(Android fork*) although they're nice. Could be interested in an Ubuntu one though. I never heard of the other one, apparently they operate in Europe.

We do have a Meizu MX3 forum...

...not exactly busy though....LOL.

* BTW quite a few Chinese manufacturers are doing their own things with Android now, and forking it. Was looking at an Oppo x909 yesterday that was running something called "ColorOS". Although in small letters it had "based on Android".

ColorOS??????

I think it is good for Ubuntu to go for the other markets outside the US, because we are dominated by iOS and Android. Even Windows (an American company) is having lots of trouble here. Adding another to the party.. It becomes flooded.

Outside the market where they already there, that's where they will do good.

Lenovo is smart to buy Motorola, because now they just came into the pool with a head start. But I don't think that we will see Lenovo phones here in the US. I doubt that people even know they make phones at all.
