If the pattern/PIN has been forgotten, a complete wipe/factory reset is in order. All apps, data and settings will be lost.
If it's a Gmail password, then simply try logging in with that e-mail address on a PC at mail.google.com and go through the "forgot password" procedure.
To reset the tablet, try this:
1. Press and hold Power + Home + Back keys
2. Then when you see a black screen that says Press the required keys for a factory reset
3. Press and hold the Power + Home + Back keys again
4. Then your system will do a re-flash Please note this process will erase all your data and will go back to the factory settings.
That should work.
