Password protect Gmail?

Does anyone know of a good way to protect gmail with a password.

I want to be able to access my email on my phone but I don't like the idea that if I lost my phone anyone could just turn it on and get into my email account without a password required.

I tried installing the free Android Protector app but it doesn't seem to work on the i7500.

If I had a screen pattern to unlock would that completely stop people gaining access? I have a feeling that there would be ways around this.

Ideally I want it to ask for my gmail password everytime I open Gmail on the phone, just like it does in a web browser.

Thanks.

Screen pattern to unlock is a way to go.
But be warned: if you forgot the pattern - you will need to reflash the ROM again.
