pay for Google maps

first time using Google maps, basically I've downloaded the UK maps for free, bit do I still have to purchase it to get car directions like a Tom Tom?

No, but with google maps you do need a live data connection for it to get maps as you travel.

Google also makes a free Navigation app that seems to come with all Androids which is really cool, in 3D, and seems to be what you want. Its icon is a blue arrow pointing up.
