pc doesn't read my phone (galaxy ace)

my galaxy ace is on 2.2 froyo and i want to update it to the latest version 2.3, but my laptop doesnt read my phone... so, even with kies, i cannot update my phone... also, the 'software update' option in the 'settings --> about phone' menu isnt available... this is strange because my brother has the exact same phone but he has that option and updated to gingerbread without any problems... is there any way i can fix this issue? or how can i do a factory reset without connecting my phone to my laptop?

Check whether your PC has the Samsung USB drivers.
and the "software update" is available in 2.3 only so it's not a prob you'll get it when you upgrade to 2.3
