Help PC Doesn't Recognize HTC Droid Incredible

Nothing works. I've tried:

  • Checking "usb debugging" box
  • Installing .inf files manually from device driver and right clicking "install". Neither method would install. Now I can't even find the "unknown device" in the device manager.
  • Installing HTC Sync
Using Windows 7, 32 bit. My PC's like 7 years old. All my ports work fine. The usb cable charges when connected. I had to cover a couple parts with tape fyi. Very tiny cuts in the outer plastic.

Do other phones like Samsung have as much problems like this? Seems like something pretty simple. Makes me think HTC is garbage as I've heard a lot of negative stuff.

Not all USB cords are created equal, just because it can charge doesn't mean it can transfer files... Try another cord...

some general tips for troubleshooting:
troubleshooting connectivity issues:
*make sure you have changed to your adb/fastboot directory!
*make sure usb debugging is enabled(checkmarked) to use adb in the OS
-try a reboot of the PC
-try different usb cables and ports
-dont use a usb hub
-dont use usb 3.0
-make sure nothing capable of comunicating with the phone is enabled and running. htc sync, pdanet, easy tether, and even itunes have all been known to cause issues.
-windows 8 has been known to have issues. try a windows 7 or older machine

failing the above,
-i use these drivers for fastboot and adb(donwload and run as admin): http://downloads.unrevoked.com/HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe (mirror)

failing that, try manually updating the drivers in the following manner:
-put the phone in fastboot mode(select fastboot from the hboot menu)
-open device manager on the PC
-plug in phone, watch for it to pop up in device manager.
-update drivers with device manager, pointing the wizard to the extracted
driver download folder from above

note that you can check the connectivity of the phone, and make sure drivers are working by in the following manner:
-open cmd window. change to directory containing adb/fastboot utilities

-adb with the phone in the booted OS,usb debug enabled, enter:
adb devices in a cmd window

-fastboot with phone in fastboot(not hboot!),enter:
fastboot devices in cmd window

in either case,a properly connected phone with working drivers installed should report back the phones serial number.

PS, you can find A LOT of negative stuff about any phone manufacturer...in my experience HTC is one of the better manufacturers... Your experience may vary.

Thanks. I've pretty much given up at this point. Will try to get through the rest of your post, maybe try again.

I think the fact that there's no microSD card slot is one of the main things that makes me think HTC is crap. It's something so simple, and like Apple they don't have one. Guess that's why they're starting to lose money.

the htc incredible does have a micro sd slot...it is under the battery cover

I chuckled. Thanks, I know. You need tools and a few minutes at least just to get to it. There should be one on the side that is easily accessible. I can't believe devices like this don't have one.

I agree, I do like them more easily accessible, at least it isn't like the original moto droid where you had to take off the back cover AND take out the battery...but I've moved to a galaxy nexus which has no SD card support :p
