pc doesnt recognize phone as storage

for some unknown to me, reason, when I connect my phone via usb to a pc, it charges, but my pc does not recognise it as an external storage device

what can I do?

What phone do you have?

Go to menu>settings>wireless and networks>usb settings>make sure its set to mass storage.

The phone i supposed to ask how you want it to behave once you plug it into the computer. Doesn't matter what make or model it is.

Phone model and make matters because the menu string might be different, and no the phone will not ask always. My phone used to ask me how I wanted to connect, but after I ugraded to 2.3.6 official ROM, it did not anymore and the always ask option disappeared from the settings menu.
