Peacocks

No, no one's eating peafowl as far as I know...just killing them for the hell of it. :(

it's Whitetail Deer who end up as public enemy #1 where I live. it's truly sad that the most unique and beautiful species just happen to end up on the dinner plates of our species far too often...
Not your dinner plate, or mine, Nick. :D

Btw how do you edit the text below your name? I don't seem to have that option in my user CP, or I'd have 'I'm a deer lover, not a hunter' there (yes I love Star Trek)

It's sad, first thing people assume when hearing the words 'Deer lover' is that I hunt. I ask them, do dog lovers eat dogs? And they get all silent.

Here's the last pic I got of our local bird

I think I've already fessed up to you [a while back] that when I first 'met' you, I assumed the worst. I was shocked--and thrilled--to find that you're vegan. :D

Yep, that would do it!

He's pretty. Thanks for sharing.

BTW, my favorite peacock just finished losing his feathers for the season. He was the last of all the boys in the neighborhood--the others started losing theirs as far back as June. I think it has something to do with the alpha male hierarchy. Here he is on 09/03 and 09/04:

His transformation won't be complete until he loses his crown...then the cycle starts all over again, and by January he'll be back in all his glory.

Very handsome Peacock there,Nick!!!
@ moody....for the first two years i truly thought someone was catching Sam sleeping and snatching handfuls of feathers out at a time. I had no idea they shed ask their feathers. Luckily I learned quickly enough that I can make a few bucks off the ones I pick up to make DIY stuff with.lol

So they do shed their feathers! Wow what a relief, ours has lost his and I assumed some moron clipped them for souvenirs.

Yes, andrea and Nick, they *DO* lose their feathers. :) All of the long ones--the 'eye' feathers and 'arrowhead' feathers, plus their crown/crest. I used to tell my mom I was going to bring Mr Peacock inside once he'd lost all his feathers--because he's a LOT smaller then! (My six cats would love to have a big brother to play with, but he's not potty-trained.)

By January, perhaps February, they're back in all their glory:

Just some more trivia fun, deer also shed their antlers as well every year. Most hunters don't know that so it's quite common to find sawed off antlers from deer killed.

Nature is a bit sexist, many species of birds have the males all colorful and dazzling while females are lesser seen and drab. Although I'm more fond of a doe rather than a buck. So it must apply to birds only. A doe is quite sleek and beautiful and has a very loving and laid back personality while a buck is a lot more like a bull, tending to be more aggressive, messy and loves rolling in the dirt (well, Jack rolls in mud)

Yes, exactly. Peacocks are a perfect example of that. The males are spectacular, from their royal blue necks to their amazingly beautiful long feathers, they're a sight to behold. The females? Well, they're okay, but no one will give them any awards for being spectacular! :)

:D

Funny thing about peafowl, they HATE water. It's actually kind of funny. When the sprinklers are running in my backyard, if the wind kicks up and blows some spray over toward the patio, the peafowl go on alert, like, OMG!! is it...RAINING??!!! ON the rare occasions when it does rain, they're nowhere to be found.

One day last year I was on my way out the patio door, and a bunch of peafowl who'd been snoozing in the backyard heard the doors open and started running toward me. (They know where the peanuts come from.:)) One of the youngsters was so focused on running to the patio that he didn't notice...the POND. And fell right in. I learned then they can swim--if they have to. :D

Because of the ridiculous heat here lately, I've barely spent any time outside for the last week or so. I've still freshened the bird baths and put out food, but I just haven't stayed outside. Today it was about TWENTY DEGREES cooler, only in the 80s. :D So I grabbed my camera and went outside for a bit--and lo and behold, the boys are getting their new feathers in already!

This is not a great picture, and kindly ignore the crap in the background. :) These siblings have just started to differentiate their feathers; the one on our left is female, the one on the right, male.
