Hi All,

Just getting up to speed with my new HTC Desire HD running v2.2 I would like to use the installed People App as a customer contact address book however, I have noticed that the address is only diplayed on 1 line.... If I click on the address it starts searching for it on maps (dont want to do this).. Often most of my customer address's are longer than one line so I cannot see it all - does anyone know a simple way to display the whole address or perhaps a better app for this type of thing. I have tried rotating device but screen rotation doesn't seem to be supported in the 'People' app..

I've noticed this problem too. I can fix it by manually copy/pasting, but it's not something I'd do for all my contacts. I've tried fixing it from the Gmail web client, but that doesn't really work either as Gmail contacts are 'free-format' (and that may be the real problem)

Some contacts do display correctly but there seems to be no rhyme or reason to it.

This has been noticed in other threads - and by me as I also have a DHD. You're right, you can only see the full address *if* it fits on that one, small line. You can tap the address and get Google maps up. You then tap the flag which shows the location and you THEN get a window with the full contact address. Doh! However, since the last DHD upgrade (just before Xmas?) when you tap the address you get the HTC Locations mapping app. And I've found no way to get the address from that.


What is needed is the option to JUST display the address. What's so damn hard about that? *If* I decide that I need to see the address on a map *I* should be able to choose....... aaaarrrrgggghhhhhhhhh ..........

This bugs me to on my Desire. I do want to send things to my contacts physical address now and again - birthday and Christmas cards and so on. I plugged all my family addresses in thinking this would be a good replacement for my battered notebook, but when I looked back I got the same issues that I couldn't read the address easily. Would like to keep it all in the HTC app, as it is all synchronized with Google, so if anybody does know of a setting we are missing please shout!
 
Yep. thks for the replies - it is starting to really bug me all I want to see are the addresses - if there was an option to display all the contact information on a single page i.e. phone, mobile, email & full address then the people app would be great without it automatically starting maps & the like....

It is also one of the few apps that you cant display in landscape as well.. I figured if I turned my phone on its side I'd see more but no such luck....:mad:

Does anyone know how we go about getting a fix - It must be a really minor change...

Is there another light-weight application that can show contact details? If not, then maybe I should modify my app to show a contact summary page that shows the full address.
 
I have spent some time looking for an app & can't find anything suitable. I don't mind paying as long as it does what I want. Most of the contact apps are tailored towards texting, email, facebook etc. & don't seem to care much about postal address's... :( Your app would certainly warrant taking a close look at if like you say it had a page where you could see a summary of the contact info including FULL postal address.

You may be interested to hear that I'm in the process of releasing an application called Contact View that works with my existing Contact Search apps. Should be on the market in the next few hours.

Contact View shows the contact details in a format similar to the vanilla Google Contacts application. It's a 'view' only application but does feature a 'Quick Contacts' widget from which you can call, email, etc. It is OS 2.1+ at the moment, though I may look at doing an OS 1.6 version if there is enough demand.

Wow! what can I say - I am wholly impressed - just downloaded Contact Search which works great & now added Contact View :) I love the way I can either do a quick press on the contact to take me to people where I can compose texts or call contact etc. via people or with the longer key press take me to the summary page which shows ALL the information I want to see. It's also great that the summary page only shows the fields I have filled in.

I really can't thank you enough for adding this function - I only started this thread a few days ago. I will use 'free' version just to fully test it etc. but will then certainly upgrade.

There's at least one bug in the view that I'll sort out in the next day or two. You can see one in the screenshots on the blog. For one address it consists of a couple of lines in the 1st address field plus city and zip. It shows the 1st lines correctly but not city and zip. The other address has one line in each field and shows OK. Not sure if this is my problem or Google's.
 
This sounds great and like it would solve that stupid problem with the htc phones and viewing the address but I can't get it to work. I dl'd contact view and then contact search then opened up contact search and it worked fine but when I long press the name to check out the address (the contact view portion), I keep getting a force close. When I tap on the name, it just goes to the ppl app which of course doesn't help in regard to reading the address. What am I doing wrong? I uninstalled and reinstalled both apps and tried again and still getting the force close error. Help!

Hmm, sorry to hear that. Any chance you can look in the log file and tell me what it shows. There's a free tool called aLogCat that you can download from the market for this. You can email the log from this tool too, just send it to ContactView at softwyer.com

Gah, looks like I've used some OS 2.2 only calls. It might take me a day or so to unpick these.

Seems to be exactly what I'm looking for. I can install and run Contact Search just fine but Contact View won't install correctly. The notification says it installed correctly but it doesn't appear under the main list of apps. When viewing in market it says it's installed, but when viewing details in market, the only option is to open or uninstall and open is grayed out.

Uninstalled, rebooted phone and reinstalled but same result. Running OS2.2

Didn't realize that I needed to use it w/ Contact Search.
 
This may be slightly off topic, but you folks seem to know a lot, so may know this too. Is there any way to change the 'Contact Type'? I accidentally entered a bunch of contacts as the 'Google' type rather than 'Phone' (didn't know there was a choice). I sync with my Vista PC, not Google, so these contacts do not come across to the PC. I'd prefer not to have to re-enter them all.
 
I think, maybe guess is more accurate, that if you export your contacts to SD, then you can import then and it gives you a choice of where to put them (phone or google account).

Problem is, your going to have to export then clear out contacts then import to avoid duplicates.

Can anyone confirm this? I tried it in an OS 2.1 emulator that does not have an associated google account and it didn't ask for a contact type.
