Hey all
So a few months ago I finally made the upgrade to an Android device. Previous phone was a Nokia Nuron basically a first generation smartphone which served me well for three years but I wanted 4G web browsing and the flexibility of the Andoid OS. So I bought a refurb Samsung Sidekick 4G off eBay for $150-ish (T-mobile). First of all, I freaking love this thing (posting this thread on it, actually). I was expecting just something a little faster and with a few more features then the old phone, and if I had known Androids were this awesome I wouldn't have waited so long upgrade.
Anyhoo...I am generally computer savvy and love tinkering so playing around with unlocking the phones capabilities was a natural step. I rooted it the first week I had it, and started playing with trying overclock it. Unfortunately I couldn't do so stabilly with the free version of Tegrak due to know core voltage adjustment option. I got the paid for version of Tegrak Overclock today and started experimenting...after a while I thought I had it running stabilly at 1.252ghz with 1400mv core voltage, but it only worked for about an hour before it crashed. I got it to run stable at 1.236ghz with 1400mv core, but not being confortable running it at the max core voltage I backed it off to 1.200ghz at 1350mv which is the current setting and its working well so far. The only thing that concerns me a little is the increased heat I feel under my thumbs as I type this, which I guess is to be expected running the processor overclocked and overvolted but is it something I need to worry about damaging the phone? I have seen a significant jump in performance between overclocking even at only 1.200ghz and freezing all the factory installed bloatware apps with Genesis App Manager. Is there anything else I can do to wring some extra juice out of this thing? My RAM is pretty much at its limit even with some of the factory apps frozen I only had like 62mb free out of the 512mb this deviced is supposed to have...is it possible to use the SD card as a virtual RAM of sorts, the way a PC uses the page file on its hard drive?
Second problem is battery life. Granted the phone is over a year old now so its possible the original battery is simply losing its ability to hold a charge. It literally eats battery power when I'm actively using it to do anything more then just play music while I drive (which is what I do all day, I'm a truck driver). By far the biggest battery drain seems to be using data connection I.e. web browsing and downloading. Before anyone says it, yes I am aware that overclocking and overvolting the processor will further increase battery drain. I do plan on ordering an aftermarket battery I found for it made by a company called Mugen Power (I laughed because there's also a company called Mugen Power that makes aftermarket performance and body parts for imports, I have a Mugen lip kit on my Accord) that is rated at 3600mAh as opposed to the original battery's 1500mAh so that will definitely help but that won't be for a month or two I'm in the process of moving right now so money is tight and the higher capacity battery is 90 dollars. In general, are there any tweaks or anything I can do to help decrease battery drain, especially in the area of data connection since that seems to be the biggest power drain by far?
Thanks for your time y'all.
