Why do so many apps need to access "the list of accounts known on my tablet"? I see that permission on nearly every app, so I am not overly concerned about it. But I don't get it - not for something like a slot machine game. It shouldn't need to do anything but sit there and let me play it

It depends. A weather app will need permissions to your location or an SMS app will need access to your contacts. Some apps can have dodgy permissions and don't need certain permissions to begin with. A simple wallpaper doesn't need access to your contacts, location, or any other info. Here's a link to a thread with lot's of valuable info on this and can better explain it that I. :) Android permissions explained, security tips, and avoiding malware

As for needing access to your accounts I'd imagine if it might be a social networking app such as Facebook, but am not sure wh ya slot machine game would need it. Some apps that are free need phone status and identity, location and network access for adds and such.
