Root personal hosts file. root my phone? confused

what's going on? i'm a total android newbie and new to the forum. I was just wondering what exactly rooting was, or adb push and stuff like that. as well as what it involves. the reason i want to do this is i want to setup a hosts file for my android phone. i know there are some apps that do this you can get from the market, and if it's possible i wouldn't mind getting the urls within them to add those to my hosts file, but really i would like to edit my own hosts file. it sounds super crazy complicated to me so far. i though doing things like this would be really easy with an android phone.

also, i was wondering if there's an easy way to just look through recent urls my phone has sent or received data from, this way i could build a hosts file as i go along.
