The trend in smartphones these days seems to be more screen and less bezel. The Nexus 5 seems to be following this trend. I like the trend, but it seems to me that eventually it will get to the point where the front of the phone is not much more than a screen. The LG G2 is already getting close to that. How will any given phone be different from the others when it is nothing more than a screen? How will it have any distinctive personality at all?

Personally I like the screen to bezel ratio on my Galaxy Note 3. The narrow bezels along the vertical sides give one room for your fingers to wrap around without invoking commands. In addition I find it a nice look design wise.

If the size of the Note 3 doesn't suit you, that's something I find perfectly normal. At least Samsung provides choices.

By all appearances in the rumored mock ups of iPhone 6, if Apple does increase the size of their tiny display, it will be via a side to side bezel free display. Although their excuse is to keep the size compact, I believe it'll be one of their bragging points. It's a look I find repulsive. Yet don't get me wrong, I may be outspoken, but in no way am I bashing Apple.

As far as similar looks, it's like laptops, form factor is a product of functionality. Personality of devices is created by the Operating Systems they run and apps they offer.

In either event, choices are great, smartphones are getting better, and everyone benefits. :)

I really don't like bezels: they're just so much wasted space. They make the phone bigger for zero practical advantage (for the user - obviously there are engineering reasons). Far better to use the entire front panel as screen. You still have the rear panel and the edges for 'personality'.

There was a leaked picture from the KitKat launch that showed what might have been a Nexus 5 that was absolutely huuuuuuuge. That was a mega turn off for me: no way would I want a phone the size of paperback. Now that the phone appears to be the same size as an N4 .. I'm actually tempted.

As for Apple: surely they have got to increase screen size next time - I'm gobsmacked they didn't ditch the same-form-factor-for-2-phones rule and do it this time

My missus just got the iP5s (almost entirely indistinguishable from her old iP5 - to the extent we kept picking the wrong one up) and when I use it, the screen feels painfully small. Even her iFan friends prefer to see things on my larger screen. I have to admit that the fingerprint recognition gizmo is kinda cool, though.

I think the Nexus 4 has the perfect bezel to screen ratio. The nexus 5, even though it has a little less bezel, I don't think it takes away from the quality of the phone at all. Both devices, even the G2 and Note 3 stated above are perfect, maybe not for me or you, but someone out there. That's the glory of android. Numerous devices are available, just pick the one that matches your personality.

True enough.

And the latest rumour gives the Nexus 5 a 100% personality boost as it's now also available in white :D

Wrong white again though - I wish they would make a fully white phone, not just the back cover. I'll definitely be getting a black one.

I'm glad they're giving launch buyers a choice in colors instead. I actually like the panda color theme and would have bought a white Nexus 4 had it been available from the start. Choice is always a good thing and hopefully will make it easier for everyone to get theirs.

Its kind of growing on me too now :o. I guess if I were to get a case it would end up hiding it anyway

Absolutely!

I actually quite like the look of the white version, but all white would be better.

My bro had the original white iPhone which had the white back / black front combo and it was fugly. My missus' last two iPhones have been white both sides and they look way better. Actually, they also look way better than the black version.
