Or am I wrong? Because if there is one already why does it have to be called Samsung galaxy s3 watering hole, why not just off topic watering hole?

Yes, it's called the Lounge.

Now the watering holes are lounges within the Lounge, and since they've cropped up the Lounge has changed.

They were intended as a stepping stone for what the Lounge offered. Not a permanent solution. Some were created when there was no demand for them.

Most "(device name) watering hole" threads are generally populated at their onset by a community of that particular device users. They bonded around that device forum and like to meet and chat etc.

I think their existence is another of many reasons Android Forums is special.

Good question. This, The Lounge is an off topic area, but the watering holes are like a place for people who have that device to get together and talk about it or anything else being totally unrelated. All that gets talked about in the watering holes is off topic 98% of the time I'd say. It does say Samsung Galaxy S3 watering hole or Nexus Watering hole, but all off topic stuff.
It could be an off topic watering hole, but since it's about a particular device and mostly off topic they're mostly active threads.

I just wanted to add that you don't need to have the specific device to post in the threads, they mostly get started because people get to know each other from the regular phone threads and want to chitchat, but other people join in when they get bored or whatever. Anyone is free to put their two cents in.
