Petition for HTC to address screen scratches!

Mirlina

Lurker
Dear all,

After having experienced scratches on my phone's screen and reading countless of similar complaints by others, I have decided to petition HTC to do something about it.

The phone is supposed to have Gorilla Glass 2 which is scratch-resistant (not scratch-proof, I know) and so should resist the kind of scratches normal glass would endure from being in a pocket with keys. But it seems that HTC One X users are divided into two camps: The 'My screen is crazy durable! I can put it in the tumble dryer, take a hammer to it, etc.' camp and the 'I've got a scratch within an hour of having it. It was just in my pocket!' camp.

There is cause to believe some batches were simply defective.

Please take the time to sign this petition! Thank you.

Petition HTC One X Screen Scratches

PS - Don't bother saying:
1. It is not invincible or scratch-proof. It is only scratch-resistant.
Yes we all know this, but these scratches have occurred through normal use.

2. If you care so much, then why didn't you use a screen protector?
Because the whole point of having Gorilla Glass 2 is for users not to have to resort to using screen protectors which detracts from the beauty of the graphics.

3. You must have done something to it, MY screen is perfectly fine!
No, majority of those who have complained have either taken extreme care in using their phone, or used it in a way any other person would have. Most have also used HTC phones previously with no such problems.

This needs to be advertised more widely. I had my one x for a week and its screen is covered in scratches; my Galaxy S2 is a year old and in immaculate condition.

I too have very fine scratches going up my screen... Nothing to cry about, but definately gets me sad when I see this beautiful device sitting with the screen off with scratches. I baby my phone and they still appeared... I'll be signing. A top of the line phone shouldn't succomb to this lol

I agree. Help me spread the word!

Exactly. We appear to be the minority who are suffering from this problem. Others can put it in the dryer and subject it to all sorts of crazy tests with no effect on the screen whatsoever! Something's not right.

Mines got very faint scratches too. The screen is too beautiful to cover up, and even my Hero was more resilient.

I've even dropped mine 3 times so it isn't the most well treated phone ever, and I have no idea what you're talking about.

I take mine to work and use it for music during a physical outdoor job, and nothing. I also keep it in my pocket with my keys sometimes which I would guess should cause scratches. I am guessing despite saying otherwise you're doing something.

I've had the One X for about a month and I have more tiny scratches than my EVO had in two years.

Something definitely isn't right.

Between the battery life and the scratches, this will be my last HTC phone unless I read some glorious reviews on future devices.

BTW, I love the phone otherwise, but there is no reason to not have an SD card slot, tough screen and replaceable battery.

Just a little update. The guy at the AT&T warranty center in Waltham, MA told me te One X has Gorilla Glass 1, not GG 2. He also said the glass is different for different phones which would explain why my EVO is tough as nails and the One X is prone to tiny scratches.

I assumed my One X would be as tough as my EVO so I never used a screen protector on my HOX. Since they are sending me a new one, I'll use a screen protector until I decide if I am going to keep the One X or sell it and get an S3.

Thanks for the update! I've got a few myself. First is a reply from Corning offering for their engineers to consider if they would like to conduct tests on my screen. However, this would be on the basis that I will not be notified of the results, and neither will I receive my very expensive phone back. They will however give me a 25USD gift card. How kind. Just sounds like they are nervous to me. I will be looking into alternatives of testing the screen.

Second is a compromise offered by HTC to replace my screen at a discount. While I really appreciate their wanting to meet on some middle ground here, I would still like some closure on if my screen is defective. Even if the test results are negative for defects it would make me happy to know for sure. So please continue to sign the petition for those of you who have the same issue as it will be useful to know how many of us are put there.

Will keep you all posted.

I covered mine. On the iPad I trust the Gorilla Glass, on a phone... no way, to much possible contact with sand. All it takes is one swipe of your lint free cloth with some sand underneath to cause a scratch on any of these hardened surfaces. It would be curios to see if different batches of the glass behaved in different manners. Seems odd that there's such a large discrepancy of experiences.

Don't be too concerned about GG1 vs. GG2. I think that the GG1 is actually just as scratch resistant. The appeal of the GG2 was making it thinner/more flexible to resist cracking from torque and to allow for thinner overall handsets with less weight.

I have mine completely protected by a skin. I prefer a skin rather then a case. That was I can see the beauty of my One

Latest update: I have had my screen replaced for free but unfortunately they would not let me keep the replaced screen. I was hoping to be able to send it in for tests but now I can only hope that HTC themselves will do so and respond to the results accordingly whether or not it is faulty.

For those of you who are still facing this problem and feel strongly that there is something dodgy going on with your screen, I urge you to do something about it. Do not simply accept it as fate or your fault or listen to the Negative Nancys. Because even if it turns out that there is nothing wrong with your screen, it is good to know for future reference.

Thank you to those who have given it, your support and signature on the petition.

Glad i came across this thread!
The other day i dropped my HOX onto laminate flooring from sitting height, i now have quite a few scratches on bottom left hand corner. Every time i look at the screen in daylight or worse, my worklight (which emulates daylight) i want to cry!
My screen was scratched by 'soft' wood flooring from only about 1 foot height. Is that normal for gorilla glass? or do i sign this petition?

Ick, I'm sorry to hear that happened. Unfortunately I can't comment on whether or not Gorilla Glass should be able to survive drops. The situation I had in mind when I put up the petition was that the phones were not dropped or anything like that. They were only put in pockets and used normally.

I'm in exactly the same position as you!
I decided to try using mine without the skin for a few days due to the skin pressing down on the power button,

Yesterday due to the slippery back of the standard one x it fell off the sofa arm bout 1 and a half foot onto a laminate floor
It now has a big scratch on it that can be easily seen when the screen is black and I can feel when I run my fingers over it.

I am more than a little pissed! (and the skin is back on:mad:)
I know it's mostly my own fault and but is there any way to get scratches buffed off or something?
