Phantom Data in Android?

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to android and I hope this is the right forum. I have a motorola phone with android 2.2.1 (I think) on AT&T. I hardly ever use data (when I had an iPhone, I only used around 30MB/month). I have made a conscious effort to not use any data on the phone even when I'm home and on my wifi network.

Here's the issue:

Even when I don't use data at all, I get around 4-5MB of data per day. Even when I'm home and on WiFi. I've turned off all widgets, used a task manager to automatically kill almost all applications, and I turned off all location services (I don't use them). But I'm still almost at my data quota of 200MB/month!!

Why could this be? What can I do to find the problem and fix it? Thanks!!

Task manager is doing you no good, your phone will just open them back up again. They are only cached mostly, not really open. Just leave your data turned off all the time, from settings.

But wouldn't that defeat the purpose of having a smartphone in the first place? If I have to keep the data off?

I installed a program (Track your 3G) on the phone. And after an hour it's been tracking, a few things have been using data on 3G:
  • Policy Manager Services
  • Calendar Sync Adapter
  • Gmail
  • Motorola Services
I don't understand why Gmail would use any data over 3G if it's connected to WiFi. Also, what do policy manager services and motorola services do? Those two are using the most data. How can I turn off those and calendar sync adapter--I don't even use the calendar.

Thanks!

If your using wifi you don't need your mobile data on. And only turn your mobile data on when you are away from wifi and need to use it.

The only thing I know of that turns my mobile Internet on is sending pictures through text messages. Are those things under accounts and sync in your settings menu.
