Did you set a pattern lock on the phone? Many times when unable to re-create a defined pattern lock, the phone will lock up and ask for a Gmail username and password. On occasion it will reject the password information provided for no apparent reason. When this happens the only way we know to get past this is to boot the phone into it's recovery menu (if it supports one) and do a complete factory data reset on the phone.
