Help Phone App Question

Is there a way to close the apps you use on your phone?

I have an app called task switcher and shows all apps running
and lets say i open market and click back till i see the ...home if u will call it? or hit the home button on the g1 yet when i run the task switcher says market is still running along with ANYTHING else i open...are these apps really closing down?

Please don't take this the wrong way as I am not trying to be unhelpful but this question has been asked and answered a few times now. Might be worth a search of the forum
