Phone arriving today - should I install Jellybean?

Hi guys,

My Galaxy S3 should arrive today... my only (very limited) experience of Android to date is with my girlfriends old Orange San Fransisco/ZTE Blade that ran like an absolute dog when she first got it with Orange's own software, but then turned out to be an incredibly good phone once I installed the custom firmware.

I'm wondering if it's worth doing anything similar with the S3? For what it's worth, coming from iOS I'm more interested in having a nice, simple interface that feels really nippy and solid, rather than having something I can tweak the hell out of.

Thank you :)

If you want something that you don't have to tweak, I'd suggest you stick with stock touchwiz. Theres quite a lot of issues I've read about with flashing a new ROM

The latest leaks are apparently very stable. I am still waiting for kernel source code to be released

Thanks berry :) There aren't any other custom ROMs or anything out there worth trying either then?
here's the thing bro, although JB development has progressed a lot, but it still has some bugs. And the main point is, if you flash a custom ROM now, you will still have to wipe your phone, then install the latest official JB from scratch, you cant simply update OTA (over the air) like normal updates

So, in the light of the above, it is really not worth it. I tried JB for a day, nothing really amazing about it, just a gimmick with the So Called "Project Butter". It won't allow your phone to make you breakfast  or anything really more special thatn what it currently can

Yes, Google Now is nice, but not worth the hassle especially since were getting the official update soon anyway

just my 2 cents

Thanks guys, I'll stick with TouchWiz for now then, sounds like by far the best option. Shame as Google Now was one of the main things that appealed to me about the S3, but I can wait.

(hurry up Samsung! :))

You can install Google Now on ICS.

I stopped reading at the end of this paragraph.

***THIS DISCUSSION IS ONLY FOR ANDROID 4.0 ICE CREAM SANDWICH! THESE APPS ONLY WORKS IN ANDROID 4.0! DON'T TRY THESE ON OTHER VERSIONS!***

So, first and foremost, Not I, or anyone else is responsible to any damage you do to your device. You are renaming/modifying system files so if you screw it up you are RESPONSIBLE, NOT US. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. Follow the instructions in this post and you should be fine.

That's just a basic disclaimer. I don't blame them. Why should they take responsibility for something you are not paying them for? It's free. There's a risk involved. It's your responsibility. But most likely nothing will go wrong.

If it was a service they were offering that you were paying for, then yes you would expect them to take responsibility if their process screwed up your phone.

Final comment. Chicken. ;)

I'm running CM10 (Jelly Bean custom ROM) and love it. But I do miss some of the stock TouchWiz / Samsung features -- mostly the camera and the smart alarm.

I'm totally happy with having Google Now and a super fast and smooth OS though.

It's up to you -- if you like to tinker, you could put CM10 on and it's still a pretty stable daily driver. If you just want to not mess with it and wait, JB should be out in the next month or two (we hope). :)

I haven't tried JB, i am enjoying using my phone with ICS, i don't want to risk screwing it up even if the risk is minimal, being the patient type i am I will wait for the official release.

Not chicken just sensible. ;)

Bad 3G performance and battery life forced me off CM10 and back to stock. The camera seemed to work better on stock as well. I'll try again in a few months.

I don't know about the 3G part (I just leave LTE on), but the battery life in 9/20 is significantly better than 9/15 build. But to me, I thought 9/15 build was still better than stock... guess it depends on how you use it.

I miss stock camera software too. :)

I'm flirting with the idea of flashing back to stock when the final S3 ATT JB comes out just to test it, but I'm liking the debloat of CM10 too.

just wait it will be out in like a month or so.

Use this simple self question, for this or any similar decision..."which would I regret more" Or, is the (marginal) upside worth the risk of the not-so marginal downside

In this case, not having JB for a month or so, or brick'ing your phone.

I think in situations like these it all depends on your confidence in your own technical skills. I am generally confident in my ability to learn and understand a technical procedure, but I wouldn't attempt something unless I was confident that I did understand.

Like a brain surgeon, you wouldn't want to operate on someone unless you knew what you were doing. However, once you have learned, you should be confident in your own abilities - more so than trusting someone else to do it, even. I wouldn't like someone else messing around with my phone or computers, but I trust myself.

On the other hand, a brain surgeon wouldn't operate unless it was necessary, because there is risk involved, and in hal1's words there would be a not-so-marginal downside to any mistake.

Maybe rooting is more like cosmetic surgery than brain surgery, however. If you screw up, it can be patched up. But if you screw up brain surgery...

I would just wait for JB having said all that. I am ;)

Yeah wait for jb to be released officially. You're new to the s3 anyway so you should love the performance of it anyway as it should be an improvement over what you were using. By the time jb has been released you probably won't have worked out all the features ics has to offer. I would recommend updating the firmware to the latest official though as I'd be surprised if it came shipped with the latest ics firmware.
