Help Phone blacked out!?

I have a Samsung Galaxy S (GT-I9000) with Froyo (hope that helps).

So today i wasnt using my phone and looked it was completly off, with the exception that it wouldnt turn on. So i removed the battery and tried again and it worked fine. Problem is that someone swears that they called me just before i did that and that it rang as normal. So phone was "off"(blacked out?), did not ring and pressing all the buttons did nothing...why did it do this and how is it possible that it was ringing on the other side?

This created a personal issue for me so all the help is appreciated. Has it happened to anyone else?

Sounds very much like it partially crashed. Removing/re-inserting the battery just reset everything. Did this only happen the once? As your phone has Froyo, suggest you do an update.

The UI part had crashed, hence the blank screen, silent speaker and unresponsive buttons, although the phone part of it was still functioning and responding to an incoming call. Different aspects of the phone are handled by different processes, and if a process falls over, that part of the phone becomes dead and unresponsive. That's what I think happened. Kind of like if a PC partially crashes, the mouse might become unresponsive or the screen goes blank, yet the PC is still playing music OK.
