Phone call and Messaging numbers

I have attached a screenshot of something that is really bugging me. How do we get rid of the numbers above the phone call and text messaging icons? I have answered all messages and phone calls so I have no idea why it's showing that I have new ones

You press the icons to open the item and then press/click on the message/caller log in thats showing.

Same with email. My email shows a 3 right now. If I open email and close it, it still shows a 3. I have to open email then click/view all 3 messages for it to go away.

I've tried that. I click on every message and every phone call and they still show. The only thing that helps is to reboot the phone.

I found the answer. I had the option of "killing every task when you leave it" checked. I took that off and now they are working just fine
