Phone Car Control

Hi all,

In my car I have a netbook, and a usb touch screen in the dash, the power/usb/video to the netbook in the glovebox is all in behind the dash, so you can unplug and wip the netbook out the glove dead easy, and I have a bluetooth remote.

I use my HTC Desire, with the hotspot app, so it wirelessly shares its internet with the netbook, so internet surfing in the car as well, apart from this the phone just charges from 12v, and its conected to my bluetooth headunit for calls (Netbook is on headunit AUX so it mutes when I'm called)

so... I have this little usb relay board from ebay, its a printed board with 10 relays on, so you install some very simple software and then when you click a button on the software, the relay fires. You can change afew settings, delay, if it goes off or stays on... its orginal use is home automation

So I've put this behind my dashboard and plugged it in my netbook, and wired it up to the central locking, inside lights, outside lights, ignition, and heater controls (took some doing that one did)

I have used my phone with logmein on to view my desktop remotely, and using the relay software test this, and it works a treat, my phone controls my whole car (very handy on a cold morning, I can start the car and get it warm before I get into it)

I've managed to perswade a friend of mine to write me some more software for the relay board, that sits in the start bar, and with a click brings a small window up with buttons on named what they do

But the problem is, I can only do it when the netbook in the car is conected to the internet via my router at home (it just about has range to reach the car parked on the front drive)

I cant control my car with my phone (when im out away from the house) because the netbook dont have internet

I need a remote desktop program that uses something other than the internet to work... and I'm not having alot of luck! wifi or bluetooth could work...

Thanks for reading!

You're like a mad professor! What an amazing range of stuff you've done. I do like the idea of being able to start the car on a cold morning though!! I just thought I'd let you know that I'm impressed - but I can't help with your problem!

Thanks very much, I'm also experimenting with speech to text programs at the moment as well

My aim is to speak to the car, turns to text, text goes in to a window where a BOT replys (much like those old MSN talking bots you used to get) bots text turns to speech

the car will then reply with... weather, the time, all satnav options such as how much longer will it be, what time will it be when I arrive, and traffic problems on route. I'm also hoping to interface my diary in there and possibly something clever with my friends (like the car will know them when they get in, and say hello)

its abit like reproducing the Iphone 4s... where you can ask it things.

I'm just trying to stay one step ahead and do something new when it comes to the car modifying scene

I just need this program though...
